Pre-fast diet for SIBO self test

Posted by vuk @vuk, Aug 26 1:50pm

Picked up a Quintron SIBO test kit from my gastro last week (after I asked him if he thot taking the SIBO test might show anything related to my EPI) and I am having trouble finding out just how much or how little (or maximum or minimum) food I should take during the 12 hour prep diet before going on the 12 hour fast after which I take the breath tests every 20 minutes.

The 'menu' included in the test kit allows:
Olive oil, Salt&Pepper (minimal seasoning)
Steamed white rice
Plain water, Plain blk coffee, plain blk or grn tea
Plain white bread
Plain tofu
Eggs
Baked or Broiled Lean Beef/Lean pork
Baked or broiled Chicken & Turkey
Boiled or Mashed potatoes (no skin) Carrots & Turnips

It says nothing re: if I must eat 3 meals in the 12 hrs preceding the 12 hr fast or one meal or any meal at all preceding the 12 hr fast. It says nothing re: how many eggs, or portions of other allowed foods one should ingest.
I have a call into the doctor's office but I am looking here as well in the event someone has more detailed experience re: this 'menu' so I can learn what's missing 'between the lines' of the very general and loosely written brochure that came with the kit.

Many thanks

PS Have been on the internet for hours and hours, including multiple You Tube and failed to find any details pertaining to my questions.

You are basically describing my everyday diet at the moment. I am not an expert on SIBO, but I have relapsing collagenous colitis that is resistant now to the best medication for it - a steroid that reduces my body’s ability to fight infections. So I am on this Colon calming diet almost identical to what you describe

My instinct is to think of this diet as similar to a palate cleanser. Ao how much you eat is or when you eat is less important than limitingbwhat you eat to a balance of that variety…
i do scrambled eggs with dry white toast and black coffee and mid morning i have a banana for lunch i have black forest ham or turkey plain white rice with salt&pepper and a cup of canned no sugar added diced fruit. Mid afternoon i have a couple tablespoons of creamy peanut butter on a piece of white bread. Ar dinner I have canned green beans, white rice, and some Rotisserie chicken(no skin). All day i sip on organic ginger tea sweetened with manuka honey that has antibacterial and anti inflammation properties.

That’s just me but may be helpful. I wouldn’t worry about timing or quantities of the allowed food. And good luck!

Thanks very much.

The dr's office finally called me back this AM and so much as said, it's not as specific as I thot it might have to be - Just eat similar to what you wrote, including noodles, etc in what might be termed a 'bland' diet.

I didn't get much response re: minimum or maximum amounts to eat but I figured if I had a 2-3 scrambled eggs in the morning and a kind of snack at lunch then a broiled chicken breast before starting the fast I should be OK.

When I am not certain of how something should be taken over a long period I always want to make sure I know more detail than the Quintron brochure mentioned so now I guess they just want 'something' in me to react with my breathing for 2 seconds into the vials w/o creating the test results in a negative fashion.

I was also somewhat concerned about motility since at sometimes what I eat does not digest as quickly as what I eat at other times and I didn't want to risk belching etc. into the vials while exhaling.

Thanks again 🙂

So i have a tip that has been a surprising miracle for me in terms of stomach and intentional gas.

Every morning i have one cup of black coffee. I will be dead before i let go of my cuban coffee 🙂 But after that cup, around mid morning, i steep 2’teabags of organic ginger tea sweetened with a heaping teaspoon of manuka honey. It too has reported anti GI Inflammation properties. Dreadfully expensive stuff from new Zealand - so give a good Local honey a try first. After that first cup, i throttle back to single tea bags and local honey and i sip at it all day, so all in all I am drinking about 3 Cups a day. No belching (or the other end🙄 ) any more.

Heres the tea i drink. Im sure any genuine robust ginger tea is good, but avoid the grocer versions

I get mine from amazon. If you want the link let me know

Good luck!

Appreciated.

What I also deal with is EPI and have to eat (or try) 2,000 calories per day. At times, what I eat may not digest quickly enuff to allow me to pile more (500-600?) calories on top my morning smoothie or earlier meals so I am in a sticky situation. (no pun intended) unless I wake up @ 5Am and try to eat every 4 or so hours so I can digest all those calories before adding more to what remains of the prior ones.

I asked the gastro if a SIBO test would be worth taking as I did get to 150lbs from 144 tho it took quite a while, and he said the test might be worth taking so I am now involved with that.

Ginger has been somewhat an aid to me, even raw ginger, tho I am thinking a good cup of black coffee in the AM might be another worthy consideration esp if taken with magnesium.

There is a local honey maker in the area (Stakich) and his honey is unbelievably awesome and popular so I may include your method in my efforts after I get thru this SIBO routine.

(This EPI 'diet' of pounding calories into my body is hard to take with so many calories per day being necessary.)

I also thot I might look for a nutritionist in the near future but the Dr stresses calories primarily, with the daily Creon, to see if I can gain weight.

Well i likely would be challenged on this colon calming diet. These days My sweet-ish splurge is a few animal crackers.
