Kinda depends on what the treatment was.
Regular PSA tests, for a start.
Maybe PET scan to check for subsequent spread.
A bit more background is needed.
You say treatment is over. What treatment did you have? Did you have drugs for treatment as well as surgery or radiation? How long were you on the drugs and what drugs?
What was your Gleason score? What was your PSA when you had your first treatment?.
How old were you when you were diagnosed with prostate cancer?
What is your PSA now? Get it tested monthly for a few months.
What did your last PSMA Pet test show?
You could live another 30 or 40 years or might only have 5 years ( unlikely) .
I know many people that are stage four that are still around decades later including me after 15 years.
What you had done and how well it worked are major factors in your future
Thank you so much. It is Gleason 9 regionally advanced prostate cancer with spread to a seminal vessel and a lymph node. He has been on treatment for a year of Orxovyx Zytega and had Brachytherapy and 25 IGMRT sessions of radiation. His psa and T are currently undetectable.
Treatment is never over, unfortunately — stage 4 is for life — but the treatments may change over time.
I'm still on ADT + Erleada after nearly 4 years because they're working to keep my cancer in deep remission. I'll likely be on them for many more years, unless they stop working, the side-effects become dangerous or intolerable, or there's a new medical breakthrough.
Great to hear his PSA is undetectable. Between Orgovyx and Zytiga it should keep your numbers down.
When you said he was finished with treatment It does not appear you actually mean he stopped taking Orgovyx and Zytiga. How Long will those drugs be continued? As long as you’re on those drugs, you are under treatment. I would think they would want to do it for two years or maybe a little more.
I don’t understand why you’re seeing the doctor once a month. You need to get blood test once a month, but there would be no reason to actually visit the doctor monthly. I have a meeting with my oncologist once a Quarter. If I have any problems or questions, I can just email her anytime. it could be you’re just going in for a blood test monthly, but seeing the doctor each time is really padding the bill, Unless your case has had dramatic twists and turns and he has to keep up with it closely.
The question I am asking is in the future when his treatment stops. We have fingers crossed travel plans for a few month so want to plan accordingly. So want know once the two years are over and if they want stop the meds intermittently how often will he get checked.
Standard of care for a patient with stable, well-controlled stage 4 prostate cancer is blood tests and checkups every 3–6 months.
If PSA is low and not changing, and there's no other sign of progression, then there's no reason not to go on a 6+ week-long trip, even while he's on his medications (I took my Orgovyx and Erleada with me to Europe last year).
Just make sure that if you're leaving your own country, you have travel health insurance with a prexisting-condition rider.
"...have travel health insurance with a pre-existing-condition rider.
....good advice.
@cheriekhan Last May, I was reluctant to join the Disney Cruise that my wife booked and prepaid in full (non-refundable) before my PCa diagnosis in Feb 2025 and SBRT treatment in April. Fortunately, @northoftheborder encouraged me to take the cruise. I took travel insurance, however I was told that my pre-existing condition would not be covered; needs to be stable for six months before the trip to get the insurance rider covering my PCa. Take this into consideration as you plan.
