Blood in Semen after Prostate Biopsy

Posted by tinker @tinker, Mar 16, 2021

I couldn't find an existing thread on this topic, but I wanted to share what I'm seeing so far, and compare with other's results.

I'm 58 years old. After discovering a 5+ PSA result in a routine adult physical, I was scheduled for and received both a MRI, and a Transperineal biopsy. In my case, they took 16 samples. I do not yet have the pathology results.

I was told there could possibly be some blood in my urine, but to watch for clotting, etc and large amounts. I was also told there would likely be some blood in my ejaculate, tapering off over time. I understand the amount of blood can be influenced by number and location of samples.

I was not prepared for what happened though. Four days after the biopsy, and to my horror, I found my expectations were way underestimated. It was not "streaks or spots" of blood, nor was it red-tinted. It looked to be pure blood. The volume was probably double what I would have expected. Hoping that the next day would be more normal, I again tested the waters.. It was nearly as bad, however, the color seemed to be a cross between pure blood and fresh motor oil.

I've got a message into my care team, and I'm awaiting a response while I also await pathology. I'm a bit nervous.

Has this been other's experience? If it is common, why understate it in the publications I was provided?

I have not noticed blood in my urine, however, it tends to be dark-ish as I tend to under-hydrate.

Ejaculate just like fresh blood, at first. I was told to expect that, but still not pretty. Sorry it was a surprise for you. I recall that it lasted for 4-6 weeks (to some degree). I had nothing in urine or bowel. But I was warned of that too.

I had a 26 core transperineal biopsy 10 weeks ago. PSA was 5.3 then. Results came back benign.
At first, the semen was shockingly dark red color. I had to use a condom for at least a month. Today, it is still brownish color after 10 weeks.
I am scheduled for a PSA test, and retest MRI at end of September. Then maybe a 2nd biopsy. My UCLA doctor said retest schedule is set between 6 and 12 months. We settled for a 7 month schedule since my 1st biopsy.
I have noticed the semen amount has greatly reduced. Also, I retested PSA on my own last week and it came back 6.8. I wonder if high number of biopsy core is the reason, or more serious issue is happening with my prostate.

Hi, also had a biopsy done may 8 last year, 12 samples.
More then anything else was what the biopsy did to my body and energy.
After the biopsy I headed straight home and into bed.
Fever for two days. Diarhea and gas from day 2 for the next 10 days.
Blood in my urine on day 3 and then a bit again on day six.

Around day nine the diarea was gone

Note: I wasn't prepared either for the biopsy. Didn't know that it could drain you and cause all the effects like weakness, fever, diarea, gas and blood and pain in prostate.

10 days ago I had a prostate biopsy. It came back Benign and I'm under 2 full years of observation. My PSA was 5 and the Urologist did the biopsy to rule out cancer. I had some blood in my urine and stool for a day after. Yesterday I ejaculated for the first time and I almost fainted because the amount of blood was shocking. I have done some searching and the normal time is a month to 6 weeks before I don't have blood in my ejaculate. Can someone tell me how long they had this issue?

Welcome @jayhall, I'm happy to hear that the biopsy came back benign. I bet the sight of blood in your semen was frightening. I moved your post to this existing discussion of the same name:
