Hey i just wanted to share my symptoms and progress here, in case anyone goes through similar.

It’s been difficult trying to pin down the cause of my symptoms and I wonder if maybe there’s multiple causes.

My symptoms started after some time of being very active, high energy and difficulty sleeping. I got pins and needles all over my body, which is something I experienced mildly and temporarily in the past, but this time it was severe and it’s lasted months, and seems worse at night. I was also getting jolts and spasms all over, accompanied with ear itching and stomach tightness, pain and constipation. I also had anxiety, depression and difficulty breathing.

At first doctors prescribed me nerve medications that did nothing, tested me for everything (even my mri came back normal recently apparently but I want to get a second opinion about my results) and then diagnosed me with anxiety, saying that anxiety can cause those symptoms.

But then my condition worsened and I began getting internal tremors sand became very weak and fatigued.

Due to error on their behalf it took weeks before they finally realized the numbers on my test results were deficient in a few vitamins (b12 and vitamin D) and iron. And I was now anemic. I’m now seeing a naturopath who has had me take high levels of these vitamins for a month, plus folate, because he speculated my folate was also low. He also has been making me take electrolytes daily, and making sure to eat regularly (and healthier).
He said it can take a long time to see progress, but I kind of doubt that as although my symptoms are improving somewhat after 3 weeks, they’re still bad sometimes. (Now they seem to randomly alternate to some days vanishing and some days being bad, which perhaps signifies recovery after all idk).

But There are a few other possibilities/ patterns I’ve noticed:

- Due to the weird ear itching I thought maybe it’s an allergic reaction. Maybe a food allergy could even cause my vitamin deficiencies. I’m waiting on a scope, and in the meantime I cut out gluten which used to be a known sensitivity for me. I also stopped using oils on my skin (despite having dry skin) because that was a known sensitivity in the past as well. And to be honest, even though it’s been only a few days of cutting out those possible allergens, I actually have noticed even more progress but still not 100%.

- I wonder if constipation is somehow causing a toxin buildup or putting pressure on a nerve or something. This could be related also to food sensitivity or allergy Perhaps. I’ve noticed my symptoms gets worse when I’m constipated and seems better after enemas. Could also be abdominal muscle trigger points causing disharmony.

- Even physiotherapists and doctors don’t know about trigger points, it’s a relatively new discovery. Muscle knots can actually cause a whole host of physical ailments rather than just pain. For example muscles in the neck can cause virtigo, chronic respiratory symptoms, blurry vision etc.
The deep spinal muscles tend to refer pain to the spine, and are often misdiagnosed as spine or disc issues, when it’s just a tight muscle that is pulling a vertebrae out of place, and as a result they found it can cause parasthesia.
I also have this issue (at least I’m really hoping it’s muscular and not the spine itself) along with muscle pain in my hips, psoas and abdominals. Doctors refused to x ray my spine saying it’s impossible for it to cause all over body symptoms (it would only cause localized symptoms like in the legs). So maybe it’s just a weird coincidence. But regardless I’m going to do regular massage on the area to see if it helps (after one day no progress yet so I may have to also visit a chiropractor to get the vertebrae back in place as per the instructions in the trigger point therapy manual.
I also had virtigo due to neck muscle issues. (Doctors disagreed it was caused by trigger points, but I know my vertigo was brought on after neck exercises). But they say virtigo can also be caused by low b12.

- Also, the day before my symptoms started I did abdominal exercises that I hadn’t done in ages. I believe this was a huge source of my difficulty breathing and stomach tightness and anxiety because my abdominal muscles got so angry after. Evidently being so out of shape. Also, one day during yoga I noticed my back pain vanished after massaging painful spots in the abdominal muscles, and after that massage my stomach tightness went away too.

So There’s a whole lot going on and it’s likely all connected.

My anxiety and depression were at first thought to be causing my issues but my naturopath instead believed they were a symptom of my deficiencies. But during this doctors prescribed me Mirtazapine, which I used sporadically to sleep through bad nights and I noticed it made me even more depressed and irritable the next day so I’ve stopped that medication and thankfully for the past week I’ve had no anxiety, for weeks I’ve been able to breathe ok etc.

Good thing my internal tremors have gotten better, I only notice them now with anemia symptoms if i over exert myself too much. So there really could be more than one thing wrong with me.
Like, I imagine since I was deficient in a few things I might also be deficient in other things for example and then there’s trying to figure out why. In my case it’s likely just because I was highly active and skipping meals too frequently (also not eating very healthy a lot) but idk it’s not like I was underweight or starving. So that’s why doctors didn’t want to test me for deficiencies at first.

Hi @thunderseed, I'm sorry that you're is such a confusing mess of symptoms. Vitamin and iron deficiency can be a major player in neurological dysfunctions like you describe. Thankfully you've begun supplementation and hopefully you'll see gradual improvements over time. The ebbs and flows of symptoms can be common while the CNS is rewiring.

I lived through similar confusing times with a whole lot going on where like you, I was trying to piece together this puzzle and figure out which came first the chicken or the egg (pardon the expression). Did anxiety trigger symptoms, did symptoms trigger anxiety. I had B12 deficiency so that was definite in triggering neuropathy, but then depression set in due to life changes and limitations, more anxiety added on, negative thinking began, sleep patterns were disrupted, diet was not as healthy as it should be, didn't drink enough water for proper hydration, pushed and crashed, medication for this medication for that, pain made me slow down and slowing down lead to deconditioning. I spent countless hours on Dr. Google trying to figure out my stuff. Ugh...the cycle of pain, it was exhausting and exacerbated symptoms.

It sounds like you are troubleshooting and hoping to rule out or find possible diagnoses or causes to help piece together your puzzle. I think it's awesome that you've been connecting some of the dots with self-awareness and finding things that are in your control like using moderation so you don't push and crash with activity, eating a healthier diet and not skipping meals. You bring up the importance and value of moderation, modification, scheduling and self-care. Without it and many other tools, I could not have achieved a better quality of life despite my chronic conditions. I hope you'll find the same outcome.

Will you keep us updated on how your continued journey goes? I don't recall you mentioning how long ago your deficiencies were found and when symptoms began?

Hey. So you’re ok now? Thanks so much for sharing that with me. It gives me hope or reassurance to hear the ebb and flow is common, because although my naturopath said it can sometimes take months, I was starting to worry he was wrong and something else was causing my symptoms. It can be quite disheartening when my symptoms get bad again after a little while of being gone, although at least they’re not as bad as when it first started. I haven’t spoken to anyone else who knows anything about these deficiencies so this is wonderful thanks!

How long did it take for you to recover?

It must be going on a few months now but Ive been on the vitamins and iron for about 3 weeks. Tested my levels again around the first week and they were starting to go up so it looks like I don’t have a problem absorbing.

I thought my anemia was getting better this week so yesterday I worked out. Didn’t bother me yesterday but today I can’t even walk for long without being weak and out of breath again, ugh. Did you have to stop working out during recovery as well? I’ve noticed every time I try my symptoms worsen the next few days.

You're welcome. You are early in the game. Great news that your levels are on the rise and your body is absorbing. Deficiencies take time to rebuild levels. I know it's tough not to worry, but allow yourself grace and patience along the way. Trial and error as far as the working out goes. Only you can gauge your body and its response. Maybe try making a schedule of workouts and have them time limited for now then gradually increase activity as tolerated. If you push too hard and feel repercussions, pull back the next time then start to build from there again. You may find a plateau for now.

My B12 became regulated through injections followed by supplements. Now I concentrate on a healthier more well balanced diet. So far so good.
