Although they inject sucrose for the PET scan, they do for cancer patients, it's best to eat a normal diet before the scan. The sucrose makes cancer light up like a Christmas tree.

That sounds scary! What if you are diabetic? Sucrose is sugar!

lilyann here, yes, it sure was scary. they were going to call 911 on me if they couldn't get my sugar up. thing is that this is the first time this happened and i have already had several pet scans the last 2 yrs. so on the 31st will be the re-scheduled one and when i went to the endocrinologist.......they gave me an accu-check and my sugar read 83 but i did have breakfast. so we will see, i do have weak spells if i eat too many carbohydrates, i find eating protein with vegetables helps me not suffer weak spells. thank you everyone. have a wonderful week-end.

If you don’t mind answering the question, what was the pet scan ordered for? You mentioned having pet scans before without having low blood sugar problems. When a scan is scheduled there is usually information regarding any necessary preparation before the scan such as fasting, eating, drinking, taking meds and special requirements if you are diabetic. How did your scan go on the 31st? Were you able to get your scans done?

lilyann here, pet scans have been ordered for then nodules in my neck that seem to be enlarging. i have thyroid cancer and had the 2 surgeries for it to be taken out. jan and march of 2023. then the radiation pills to kill any extra tissue with cancer. 11 of 19 nodules were cancer, i had the radical neck dissection. so i thought maybe if i cut out a lot of sugars for this pet scan i would see some kind of difference as far as not lighting up like a christmas tree as is what happens when they inject you with that solution. so even the endocrinologist said maybe i just cut out too many sugars. i was doing more of the protein and low carbs. so this is what i had in the back of my mind. since it seems like different radiologist has different things to say for each and every pet scan, even as far as a heart condition but the echo proofed no heart condition. so yes, the july 31 pet scan i was able to complete but with a score of 70. i did not do any thing different this time. eye dr. did not see anything diabetic with my eyes. so i have no idea what is going on inside except for maybe infection or inflammation, which it does state. so the pain in my neck and head with enlargement of the nodules, they will be doing an MRI on the 2nd of oct. then the next pet scan will be nov. 4. so thank you for asking if i haven't made myself clear please let me know as i do feel a foggy brain. god bless all.

My trip to the endocrinologist yesterday was disturbing. I have 1/2 of my thyroid out but no cancer. She usually scans my neck to check status. Well, 2 of our local hospitals merged and the one has the main control now and they took away her scanned. We all know, this is to save money, but really!
