Peritoneal dialysis, constantly throwing up and weight loss
My daughter is on Peritoneal dialysis and is constantly throwing up and can’t keep food down. She’s lost probably 40-45lbs and Dow to maybe 110lbs. Does anyone else have this issue or know the cause when on Peritoneal dialysis ? It’s driving me crazy. Her Nephrologist just changes the amount of liquid but this doesn’t seem to help. There’s only two in Billings.

Welcome to Connect @biga282 From my understanding there can be quite a learning curve to peritoneal dialysis. I’m going to tag a fellow mentor, @gingerw, who uses peritoneal dialysis daily for her kidney condition. She’s very knowledgeable and can hopefully give you some guidance for your daughter.
How old is your daughter? How long has she been doing the daily procedure at home?
Thank you. She’s 34 and has had a kidney transplant for about 12yrs and has been on this type of dialysis for about two months. She was on dialysis 12yrs ago but had a port under her collarbone. Thanks!
@biga282 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
It sounds like your daughter had a kidney transplant that has rejected, placing her back on dialysis. Is this correct? What was the underlying cause of the kidney disease in the first place? That might be a clue.
Peritoneal dialysis can be hard on the body, just like hemodialysis can be. Weight loss such as she is experiencing is definitely cause for concern! If her nephrologist isn't seeming to take it seriously, it's good that you are. Can you check with the other nephrologist in town, or is there a large teaching hospital nearby? My thought is one of the big things is to get a complete set of lab tests done to rule out any other issues. Getting enough healthy food and protein into your body is important. How long a timeframe has it been that she lost this weight? Has she checked in with her transplant center to see what they have to say on all this? Even if she had the transplant somewhere else, they would have transferred her case/care closer to home. Does she still do a yearly evaluation?

Yes that is correct. The main cause of her kidney failure is a syndrome called Nail-Patella Syndrome which she was born with. She is up to date on all lab work and bloodwork. The timeframe for her weight loss is about 2 1/2 months since she started this type of dialysis. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester is where she had the transplant. After going back for an evaluation and getting the run around by the social worker and being told she was noncompliant she decided to go to Denver for the next transplant ( recommended by her nephrologist. She has just been diagnosed with lymph node cancer and is going in for a total thyroidectomy with neck dissection next week. I’m sure this adds to her weight loss problem and throwing up constantly however I am curious if this is normal with peritoneal dialysis? Thanks
