Painful urination every 10 to 15 minutes at night during SBRT

Posted by ava11 @ava11, Apr 15 10:23am

I finished 3 out of 5 SBRT treatments on MRI-Linac Viewray machine at UCLA with Dr. Kishan. Friday was my 3rd treatment. Saturday and last night were really rough. Every 10 15 minutes I feel like urge to urinate and some pain and more pain during very little urination. Same thing again after another 15 minutes or so.
I am just sending a message to Dr Kishan's office.
Any of you experience similar problem and any remedy to alleviate the pain a bit. I am taking 8mg of Silodosin(Rapaflow). I have an enlarged prostate for the last 15 years and I was taking 4mg Silodosin once in 3 days prior to radiation treatment,
Appreciate any suggestions.

I had similar but every hour or so. It was tough for a week to 10 days. I had 21 sessions. Very little urine but strong urge and painful. I can't imagine what it would be like every 10 minutes however. With you having just 5 sessions, hopefully the pain will recede in a day or two.

ava11, inflammation of the bladder can cause this frequency and the stinging. Kishan will prescribe something. I heard at CoH that drinking large amount of water is helpful. Counterintuitive, I'd say.

gently,
I am on Prednisolone 4mg(steroids)

I had restricted flow after my 3rd mridian treatment but Flomax took care of it overnight. No pain.

AVA11, first let me say that I'm sorry you're going through this pain and I wish you a speedy recovery.
I'm curious about your procedure. You had treatment with MRIdian at UCLA recently? I'm hoping to have the Tulsa Pro treatment at UCLA. If it turns out that I'm not a candidate, my 2nd preference would be MRIdian, but I read that UCLA's MRIdian was not working. Based on your post it appears it's back up and running. Can you confirm? Hang in there man, I'm rooting for you and very interested in following your progress. Best of luck.

paulcalif,
I am on Mridian ViewRay machine. today is my 4th treatment. Varian is a big company and if it breaks, I am sure they will fix it quickly. They put me on steroids. Last night I slept well like I used to before the treatment!
Wish you the best.

Great to here you got a good night's sleep. Fingers crossed tightly for your successful continued treatment and recovery.
As to Viewray, the company that manufactured the MRIdian machine, I read that they went out of business in October of last year. I didn't know that Varian had any interests in Viewray or their MRIdian machine. Are you saying Varian now owns MRIdian? Either way, knowing that UCLA's MRIdian is back up and running is great news. When I contacted UCLA a couple of months back to inquire about MRIdian, they said there's was down and they didn't know if or when it would be up again. So, I thought if Tulsa didn't work out for me, I might need to start over with HOAG Hospital where their MRIdian was still working.
What's important is that you get through this, clear the cancer and have few or no lasting side effects. Best of luck to you!!

I live in Irvine and Hoag hospital in Irvine is 10 minutes to my house and 20 minutes to Hoag Newport. But, I choose to go to UCLA because one of my friend used to Vice chair of Radiation Oncology at UCLA recommended Dr. Kishan. He also said it is not necessary for me to go to San Diego for Proton treatment. Dr. Kishan said proton treatment will have less urinary symptoms but could have more rectal symptoms. I took it with a grain of salt.
Also I have two daughters live in Pacific Palisades, so I have good support.
Consult with UCLA, UCI and California Proton(Dr. Rossi) before you make final decision.

paulcalif,
I was on Viewray machine today for my 4th RT. Iasked the thearapist about MRIdian machine not working in the past. He said when Varian declared bancrumptsy, they didn't have a service contract with them. They didn't want to run the machine without the service contract. So, they shut it down. When new investors came in they got the service contract, he said that was last October.
In any case my friend who was the vice chair of RO at UCLA told me, it is not just the machine. It is more important to pick the right RO that has the skills, when I told him COH has the same machine!
