Hi
My right glute was painful from last 10 months and one month ago left also started paining. Pain outer hip worsens after sitting for sometime. Hamstring and glute muscles are very tight, painful and burning. No back pain. It was told that i have hip bursitis mild after an mri in Apr-24. But recently doctors told me its not bursitis but nurve pain.
Is there anyone wjo can suggest what should i do

Personally, I'd see a chiropractor. Physical therapy is another good choice. Anyway go on the internet and find exercises specific for outer hip pain. There are some really good ones and I'd bet you'll cure yourself. sample https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRkJKwBP-x4

I have issues with my spine and hips/buttocks and hamstrings. I had MRIs of spine and both hips and told I have spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and neurogenic claudication causing pain, weakness and numbness that goes down to my feet/toes. I was also told after having a hip MRI that I have bilateral gluteal tendinopathy and bilateral hamstring tears which helps explain some of the pain/weakness and numbness. My hip pain has increased since my lumbar surgery in August 2024 which is causing more weakness and difficulty standing/sitting/walking. PT started recently and is causing me some pain while trying to reawaken my muscles to stretch/strengthen them. Very painful so I empathize with you.

Have you had MRIs of BOTH lumbar spine AND left/right hips? The nerve pain can be coming from lumbar spine. Have you had EMGs/nerve conduction studies done by a neurologist? Have you tried PT?

Another option would be cortisone injections to help with any inflammation if they can narrow down the source of your pain. What types of doctors have you seen this far?

sufiyantocom, Personally, I would go to an orthopedic doctor who could possibly give you a cortisone injection in your hip.

I get them in both knees and both shoulders and they work wonders for me.

Prayers for you to get relief. Blessings.

Hi hope,

What was the nature of the lumbar surgery you had in August?

Ten years ago I had laminotomies on S1, L5, and L4. Small holes were drilled in the vertebra, ruptured disc material from S1/L5 was removed and arthritic spurs inside my spine (stenosis) were removed to give my sciatic nerve more room. So far so good. But now the only thing keeping me from fusion surgery is my strong core muscles. I'm in the gym everyday and work on those muscles everyday.

It sounds to me like the person who started this thread has sciatica. An MRI or at least an xray would be the next steps, I think, to try and isolate what is causing the pain.

These sound like symptoms of sciatica. The sciatic nerve exits the spine in the lumbar region, and spinal canal narrowing (stenosis) can pinch the sciatic nerve and cause sharp pain in the buttocks and the back of the legs, although it usually only affects either the left or right side.

Seems like an MRI or at least an Xray should be done with a spine surgeon to isolate the issue and hopefully correct.

You may benefit from adding a neurologist to your provider list to get EMG/nerve conduction testing. I’m assuming your MRIs were of spine and hips. If you did not get an MRI of your hips, you may need to see a hip specialist if your orthopedic mainly specializes in the spine.

Have you ever been tested for viruses that lay dormant in your nervous system and get triggered and surface to cause nerve pain? Some viruses may cause hip/buttock and leg pain (like HSV).

@sufiyan2kom I have had the same pain you described. It turns out I have a rotated pelvis with a left hip upslip. This created issues in my IT band, piriformis, and bursitis in both sides.I have found a PT that finally knows how to help. One dr said it was my back and sciatica but MRI did not show anything abnormal. My pcp ordered an xray of my hips/pelvis and there you could actually see the tilt, my left side was higher than the right. I saw a hip dr. After a complete exam she gave me a cortisone injection in each hip as she said I had bursitis on each side and IT band issues and sent me to a new PT. Well my new PT told me my rotation and hip hiked up can also have bursitis, piriformis issues and IT Band syndrome along with it. I had it all. My pain is finally starting to get better. Keep us posted!

Is it possible that a "hip tilt" may result from a fall, particularly a hard fall?
