Ozempic and a ton of carbs

Posted by carbcounter @carbcounter, 2 days ago

Friend with diabetes is on a cruise, already sending me pictures of desserts. So what happens when someone is on Ozempic and metformin, usually somewhat restrained on diet - but pigs out for a week?

they gain weight.

I did not have good results with WEGOVY. I started with low dose all the way up to 2.4 changing each month.

For the first 3 months actually gained weight as had so little reduction in appetite was not making a difference. The only side affect I had was slowed down digestions which changed my bowel movements from every day to about every 3 days.

When I go to the maximum dose for WEGOVY I got sick within 2 hours. Vomited next morning, vomited prior to going to Mayo Clinic with acute appointment, and vomited when got home.

My PCP said cannot give me nausea medication due to heart failure drugs I was taking. So I was told going to take several weeks for WEGOVY to leave my body. I was put on a liquid diet. I found I could eat mashed potatoes and drink protein drinks and not vomit.

My PCP wanted me to consider ZEPBOUNB in a couple of months as different drug that uses 2 receptors versus WEGOVY only using one. He went on to say he was seeing less side affects with ZEPBOUND.

So if you don't decrease your eating you are going to gain especially when you mentioned pigging out.

Can I suggest some things that help me beyond these drugs. A caveat here, I am not a dietician. I found these tips on losing weight from Mayo Clinic, WEB MD, and direct advise from my Mayo PCP.
Drink a full glass of cold water prior to eating (will help you feel full).
Eat your food slowly and completely (will help delay eating to the 20 minute mark where body signal full or not full and not just eating for flavor.
Try to fill up on vegetables and keep high caloried items smaller on your plate.
Use a small plate or bowl and tell yourself if still hungry you can always get back up.
Don't completely deny yourself foods you love. Just keep them small and in moderation.
Find low caloried snaks like air popcorn and eat on kernel at a time.

Excercise and hobbies.
Find an exercise you like to do an do it. It will help burn calories and also releases the feel good hormone the same one you get from eating something tasteful. Caveat, check with your doctors first.

Find a hoppy you like doing. Anything where you are doing something and not sitting in front of T.V. is going to help and occupy your mind and help deal with stress and anxiety that can bring on eating for taste.

Good luck. I have posted what helped me and I am losing weight without the weight drugs but very very slowly which I have told myself to be happy with not disapointed in.

I don't suppose my friend is going to gain ten pounds in a week, I hope he maintains a bit of discipline - and hunger suppression. But I was more concerned with blood glucose during this period. I think he does not take his meter with him on vacations, LOL. Or if at some point if you're on one of these drugs there is some overload/reaction. Well, I suppose he'll find out!

He was previously taking an oral version of one of these hunger drugs and like you he complained that it made him feel sick, and I think he would sometimes skip it for that reason - and it was NOT working to reduce his A1C. So he finally changed doctors, went to the injection, and that has worked far better.

I keep trying to impress dietary discipline on him but his wife likes to see him eat a lot. And he's never been fat at all. I have got him increasing his exercise somewhat. When I go to lunch with him he seldom finishes a standard order of anything! But he still orders the french fries.

I agree with pretty much all your suggested points. Thanks.
