PEMF for treatment of Osteoporosis - Is it effective?
I have just been diagnosed with Osteoporosis in my left hip. Doctor wants me to have an injection but I am considering PEMF treatment rather than medication because of possible side effects. Is anyone familiar with PEMF assisting with Osteoporosis

I recently suffered from a severely fractured humerus. I refused surgery and used a Sarmiento splint instead. My ortho added OrthoFix at 90 days which is a PEMF device. Really helped with healing a difficult fracture. The fracture healed perfectly. I give the PEMF device most of the credit as it was originally healing so slowly. PEMF is being used in Europe to treat osteoporosis in lieu of drug therapies with success. Would be very interested in your results achieved for your hip if you decide to use PEMF. I would prefer to use PEMF for osteoporosis as I cannot take drugs such as Evenity due to adverse reactions.
My wife also has osteoporosis and it actively engaged in weekly treatments that engage the concept of osteogenic loading. The are a couple companies/places to search for. First, OsteoStrong (the one she uses) and another is called bioDensity. Locations can be found on their websites.
Yes, I am familiar with pemf for livestock, mainly horses being positively treated with pemf using high frequency units with positive results to serious injuries including regeneration of bone. I would think it must work for Osteo providing its the right unit which I am researching. My preference is not to take medication as they mask the issue with side effects rather than regenerate bone naturally.
That is really interesting! Most recently I've been recommended to take Reclast, which my endo says is an old drug with very minimal if any side effects. Not what patients on this site say, and since I'm 86 I would rather not spend a year of my dwindling life expectancy in misery. Just got a DEXA which shows improvement or stability plus one - spine - now normal, after taking McCormick collagen and now minerals, exercise, D, eating more calcium, etc. Now I'm about to get an Echolight scan which is ultrasound that will show both bone density and bone quality and will get a doctor's consult plus 5-year risk of fracture.
You can do it as often as you want because there's no radiation and it's also more accurate than a DEXA. This is the standard in Europe now and I'm lucky to have the ortho most experienced with it in the country close by, in Sanford, NC.
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer but it turned out the MRI was faulty, fortunately, and he does not have cancer. There's a much more accurate up-the-butt MRI - first treatment in Europe. I'm starting to think we should check all treatments with the European standard the way we should with food additives and other food standards before we agree to them.
Thank you for sharing. I was unaware of PEMF being used for horses. My device was over $5K and had to be worn three hours daily. The efficacy rate for the humerus is only 67% and above 90% for all other bones yet it worked extremely well for my humerus. Thankful! Please let us know when you find a device that meets your requirements and is powerful enough to make a difference. Thanks!
Thanks for your info. I have read about Echolight. You are lucky to have a knowledgeable professional so close by. I agree with you about a more natural approach to improving our bones. I had the greatest improvement in my DEXA when I walked 5-7 miles per day. Became lazy…DEXA worsened. I already enjoy a great diet augmented by supplements so I need to get moving again. LOL! Please let us know if you garner a PEMF device for your hip and if it works well for you. Very interested in this since I know PEMF really helps!
@ivone49 what unit are you researching?
@stuffyoung - Can you share your last 2 Dexas so we can see how much you have improved?
I have been looking at Omi & iRMS products that come with full body mats and pads operated by a hand held program controller. These units are low density powered by rechargeable batteries and are manufactured in Europe. I think they would be suitable for aches and pains but not powerful enough to assist with bone regeneration. I am now looking at a Chinese product marketed by Aliexpress. There are several units, the large ones have a variable intensity from 1000-6000 gaus and supplied with either a full mat and various sized loops tó target specific areas on the body or both. I think this type of unit would be suitable for bone repair.
Having to wear a device for 3 hours seems to me to be uncomfortable. My view would be to have a mat that you could lie on at night and have some loops that you can target specific areas on the body in the morning. Excellent that your unit worked on bones. Could you advise the make of the machine and its specifications, mainly its intensity range usually reported as ''gaus''
Most devices seem to be manufactured in Europe and are low intensity with insufficient power for bone repair despite their claim. I am now looking at a device from China that has a varying intensity ranging 1000-6000 gaus and think this unit would be powerful enough to assist with bone repair / regeneration. I personally have no interest in the medications for osteoporosis, good commissions for doctors and pharma but poor result for patients. Regardless of age bone cells die and are replaced naturally by the immune system through exercise and diet. Changing ones lifestyle, adding supplements, calcium, vita D & K2 plus a regular pemf should help to regenerate bone.
