Which Type of Specialist is Best for Osteoporosis?

Posted by Michele @blessed09, May 8 12:22pm

I just went from years being diagnosed with osteopenia to osteoporosis my last DEXA scan was Done on 5/2
Osteoporosis in my Femoral neck and bilateral femur
My primary just received report and I see her on 5/22
I’m not sure what her next step is but
What type of doctor do I see? my insurance is ppo so I don’t need a referral from pcp. I already had lumbar spine fusion rods and pins
Osteoarthritis throughout my spine , neck so many joints
After what I went through with neurologist and still unsure
I need to know what doctor is best? And what to ask?

I believe the best doctor to help with your osteoporosis is an endocrinologist that specializes in osteoporosis. They are hard to find but worth it.

If you want a good foundation for your treatment of osteoporosis, I recorded a training I gave to the osteoporosis support group Bone Buddies that I'm sure will be helpful. You can find it here https://youtu.be/Z4uXAsnhSaA?si=Gnnwhe5Rk26WRADI . I'm not a doctor, but I have spent a lot of time collecting recent data from some of the best doctors for osteoporosis.

Good luck on your journey! Mike

If you can, find an Endocrinologist at a large Hospital setting/clinic for example Mayo. Education, support and good Medical Care is the key to navigating this Condition. This site is a wealth of knowledge for all of us to share our journeys.

I was just diagnosed with Osteoporosis. My primary care referred me to an endocrinologist who wanted me to take the Recast infusion. Recast is done once a year. I just had my first one. It was quick and not painful. I will have one more in a year, and at that time, another bone density will be done to see if the infusion has helped. Also, he increased my calcium and my Vitamin D3. Also, he told me not to fall.
