Only 3 months of Evenity with good results

Posted by tshcpa @tshcpa, 15 hours ago

I am a 62 year old female who had never taken an osteoporosis drug prior to starting Evenity. I have osteoporosis in my spine. My L1 - L4 Dexa was -3.3 prior to starting Evenity. After 3 months of Evenity shots, my L1 - L4 was -2.6, a 9.9% gain. My baseline DEXA and the one after 3 months of Evenity were with TBS. My baseline TBS was 1.313 for L1 - L4 (which is considered normal), and 1.383 after 3 months of Evenity, a 5.3% improvement. I did have hip improvement also. Left total was -1.6 at baseline and -1.2 after 3 months of Evenity, a 5.8% improvement. Right total was -1.5 prior and -1.2 after Evenity, a 4.7% improvement. My bone marker turnover numbers at baseline were: CTX - 485; P1NP - 82. At 6 weeks from 1st Evenity shot: CTX - 305; P1NP - 232. At 6 weeks from last Evenity shot: CTX - 372; P1NP - 59. I started alendronate (Fosamax) at 6 weeks post-Evenity and will stay on this for now to hopefully lock in these gains. I may start Tymlos next year to see if I can get more gains.

The reason I stopped Evenity is due to 2 different issues following shot #3. I had 3 migraines with aura (visual disturbances) the week following shot #3. I had not had any of these in 15 years since I went through menopause at age 47. This was concerning as those who have migraine with aura are at increased risk of stroke. With the black box warning for stroke, I was concerned but planned to get another shot to see if the migraines with aura continued. The week following the migraines, I developed a fever (104 at its peak) and maintained a continuous fever for 2 weeks. After many tests ordered by my doctor, no cause could be pinpointed. I consulted with the clinical nurse for Evenity, and she said it could not be ruled out that Evenity was the cause, but it was not typical to have persistent fever. My CRP was very high (34), I had headaches, an elevated heart rate and high respiratory rate for the 2 week period. I made the decision after consulting with my doctor to stop the Evenity. It was a very hard decision, especially once I found out the great gains I had on this drug. I retested my CRP weeks later, which returned to below 3. My heart rate and respiratory rates have returned to normal and I am experiencing no side effects from Fosamax so far (after 4 weekly doses).

I have learned so much from this forum, and I wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else.

@tshcpa: Thank you immensely for your info on Evenity use! I am researching and preparing for my first Evenity shot. It is so important to be informed about our treatments beforehand to help in making the best health decisions. Side-effects are not anticipated, but tolerated as much as possible. I am so sorry that your body reacted with high fever ceasing your continued use of Evenity, but I guess your body said, “enough”! Your bones did need this drug and Congrats on the amazing response of Evenity in only 3 months!
Your post prepares me for my upcoming shot and gives me confidence my body will have good bone-building response! Hug…

I am 71 (look like 61) but have osteoporosis in my spine. So far I havent been able to tolerate Risondronate, Tymlos, and now Evenity. Every drug has gotten me quite sick. I wanted to stay with Evenity because it seems to be the most effective -I would be quite ill for about 24 hours after the injection (2x) and my endocrinologist told me to stop. Does anyone have suggestions?

I don't have much experience, so I don't have any good suggestions. I'm sorry you have had negative reactions so far, and I hope you find a drug you can tolerate.
