One year post treatment and cancer returned: How to tell the kids?
Hi Friends,
My fiance's PET scan, post surgery and treatment at one year, shows that there are cancer cells in his liver and lymph nodes.
It's devastating in every way.
Tomorrow we learn the treatment plan but the radiologist told him he has six months to live if he doesn't respond to chemotherapy and 1-2 years if he does. I'm not happy that he, instead of the oncologist, gave him this prognosis. It's been a week of emotional chaos as we sort how and when to tell the six kids.
I believe in miracles. Is anyone else living with this prognosis? Hopeful words welcome!
Take care all,
Carrie

Very unusual... I'm curious where his care is...
I think many of us have talked to our oncologists (chemo oncologists), our radiation oncologists (if we got radiation), our cardiothoracic surgeons (if we went to esophagectomy), and I've also talked plenty with my GI doctor... as well as many nurses and technicians since we get so many scans, blood draws, etc.
But there are some doctors most of us never talk to... and I've never talked to my radiologist(s)... who read my scans and put the results in MyChart for me and my other doctors to read. I've also never talked to my pathologists... who analyze our biopsy material during initial diagnosis as well as for items removed during esophagectomy.
But still... while we appreciate the truth from our doctors, good or bad, we know this is cancer... and patient to patient... very hard to predict what's coming. That's why we do our treatments! All the best.

1 Reaction@southbendcarrie, this is hard news to get. I hope the appointment with the oncologist today expanded on the situation and your options. What did you find out?
Sorry to hear the news of a reoccurrence. I have only spoke with my oncologists. They have read reports from the radiologist but I have never spoke to one about my scans. I was diagnosed in 2021 with metastatic stage 4 adenocarcinoma in my liver and lymph nodes. I have had 2 reoccurrences throughout the last 4 years. My oncologist warned me that I would battle reoccurrences, I.e. “not curable”. Aggressive chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy have kept me living. Keep the faith and fight! Prayers for your fiancé and your family for successful treatments.
