Olecranon elbow fracture permanent damage?

Posted by jakesmith @jakesmith, Nov 5, 2022

I've recently fell off my bike and hit my elbow creating a Olecranon elbow fracture on my right arm. After full healing will my arm be back as normal as it was before I got the fracture, or does my arm now have permanently decreased in strength somewhat and will never be the same even after surgery and healing?

@jakesmith I think that is what we all wonder as patients... will I make a complete recovery? It depends on lots of things. If there was nerve damage during the injury or surgery, that can affect muscles because they don't get electrical communications, and then the muscle will atrophy. I broke my ankle and I'm dealing with that and trying to rebuild muscle and get stronger. I think only a physical therapist or treating orthopedic surgeon may be able to answer your question. Sometimes, we just have to wait and see and do our best to recover. Physical therapists can help a lot after an injury in knowing how to rebuild muscle and coordination and to help regain function. Surgery also creates scar tissue and that tightens up and can cause pain. Myofascial release therapy can help with that, but only after your bones are completely healed.
