Odd side effect from the steroids with Chemo

Posted by beaquilter @beaquilter, Jul 1 12:17pm

My husband had his second round of Docetaxel Chemo last week and the night before and that morning he took steroids and then some more in the IV.
Everything went fine and he felt fine, it wasn't until at home after dinner he got this side effect: Hiccups! for 3 hrs!!!
He tried everything: holding his breath, eating, water, peanut butter etc... nothing worked it was every 5 seconds! He then told me about it (I had been busy and wasn't around him but with the kids after dinner) I prayed and texted a friend who said to take a paper bag or zip loc and cover his face and breathe to the point of freaking out/ hyper ventilating, he did it and it WORKED! He was gasping for air for a minute but it worked!
It happened again in the middle of the night when he woke up to pee, but he used the bag and then again early morning but it wasn't bad.
The doctor's office replied back in the morning that there's a pill for that and called in a prescription! - for next time, though I think my husband would rather try the bag vs taking another pill.
BTW google says to go to the ER is hiccups persist more than 48hrs!
and that the steroids have been know to give hiccups as a side effect. Who knew!!
Also my husband is fine, he's tired and weak and started losing his hair 2 weeks after round 1 and then shaved it, now it's more blotchy. He's also starting to lose his appetite but forces himself to eat.

I was wondering how your husband was doing. Glad he got relief from the hiccups.

No one has responded. I have attended advanced prostate cancer meetings weekly for four years and for the last year have added 4 More monthly meetings. People come in to these meetings to talk about their experiences with prostate cancer treatment.

You are the first! Never heard of a hiccup problem before.

He's better today, day 5 and 6 he was super tired and weak and had to force himself to eat, I still think he went to the gym. Yesterday he felt much better and today he feels fine (the new normal of being on ADT and getting hardly any sleep)
we'll have burgers and watch the fireworks... wonder how many more we'll have together?
