I had mine done while I was in the hospital.. but they had previously scheduled one outpatient.. may have to wait 6 hrs they said depending on transit time.. you eat (they offered scrambled eggs.. I don't like them so I had oatmeal) and they scan you and then every 2 hours til it transits..my gastric emptying was normal so it only took 2 hours.. praying for you!!
Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @alcpc. Glad you've connected with @standinginfaith and heard about their experiences with a nuclear med GI transit exam.
Tagging @sallyw133 @januaryjane @faithful55 @jackiem95 @elle1233 @fourof5zs @tiss who may be familiar with this type of transit exam/study and have more information for you about whether this would be done as in inpatient or outpatient. They may also have additional information for you on how this goes. I'd also like you to meet @hopeful33250.
What digestive issues are you dealing with, alcpc?
The transit test I took was swallowing a clear pill that contained several little rings. I went into the office a few different times, days in between and took an xray to see how far the rings had moved in my digestion system.
Hello @alcpc,
I would like to join Lisa, @lisalucier in welcoming you to Mayo Connect. I have never had this particular GI scan done, so I cannot speak from experience. I did a search for this test at Google Scholar. Here is a link to the information I found, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0001299808001360.
Unfortunately, it does not address the patient-oriented question that you have. I would be interested in learning more. Will you post again and let me know what you find out. Has an appointment already been set for the test?
@alcpc
I had bothe the gastric emptying exam and swallowing a capsule for intestinal transit.
The gastric emptying is outpatient and not more than 3 hrs. The other test that measures intestinal transit can take more than a couple of days. It can be done outpatient- with regular check ins.
I had that pill test also..it was called a Stitz meter test..and I swallowed it at the hospital (just an office visit on March 12th) and then the checked me to see where they were on March17.. it was pretty simple and easy..thank goodness!!
