Non pharmacological tx for osteoporosis?

Posted by steige @steige, Nov 13 8:18am

I am a 55 year old female in Iowa who recently completed my first Dexa scan. My t-score was a -2.9, indicating osteoporosis😬 I wasn’t expecting this!!
I walk daily, don’t smoke, no alcohol, etc.
I drink one can of pop daily.
My question… I don’t want to do a prescription for the osteoporosis. Has anyone had luck with other things that have worked?

Most Osteoporosis is caused by decrease of estrogen during and after menopause. For some there are underlying causes. So you can do many things "right" and still get Osteoporosis.

Same here but I’m 65. I am choosing to not start any medication. I do a jumping program, lift weights, added prunes and more protein/ calcium rich foods to my diet. Check out brick house bones by Dr. Linda Moore for all sorts of help with exercise, diet and balance.

Question- i have heard that soda/seltzer can damage tooth enamel…does it also affect bone health ? Someone here must know…. I have to avoid soda ever since I got CRC…once in awhile have some Pellegrino … doc said ginger ale okay only if I leave it open to reduce fizz. I think many people avoid dark sugary or fake sugar sodas these days— as we age especially. Body doesn’t process them all that well.

Copied from the internet:
Carbonation itself doesn't harm bones, but ingredients in some carbonated sodas, particularly phosphoric acid in dark colas, can negatively affect bone health by interfering with calcium absorption. Plain carbonated water or sparkling water, which lacks these additives, does not have the same negative impact on bone mineral density. High sugar content in some sodas can also disrupt calcium absorption and contribute to poor bone health.

I had one can of Diet Coke for years and do have moderate osteopenia/ osteoporosis now...

I tried for the first four years after I was diagnosed with osteopenia. My left hip was -2.0 and spine was -1.4. I tried diet (more protein, no processed foods, increased veggies/fruits, etc.), exercise (resistance & weight lifting), calcium/magnesium, Vit K supplements. I had also been on HRT (estrogen/progesterone) for two years at that point.

Two years later I was in osteoporosis but continued without meds for another two years. I had given it a good shot but in the end I was part of the group that needs to be on medication. I took Fosamax for five years which worked initially for my spine but never did any good for my hips.

I fractured a vertebra two years ago and was switched to anabolic therapy (Tymlos, then Forteo, and now Evenity).

In my case, I believe there is a strong genetic component because my dad had multiple fractures in his 60s and wound up very stooped and frail.

It's worth a shot to see if you can improve your scores without medication. Just make sure you continue to be monitored and look into avoiding certain movements which could cause a fracture. In my case, I fractured bending over a bathtub and pressing down hard on my rib cage.

@tillymack Yes, I have mild osteoporosis…doc said after all the fairly recent cancer/surgery/treatments, this is not the time (for me) for the harsh meds usually prescribed…so I’m doing OP guided PT, trying a supplement that is a plant-based combo of calcium, D3 , K2 , a little magnesium, etc.— and walk/exercise as much as my back will allow…also, a few dietary adjustments…checked the supplement, etc. with my team as I do with everything, since we are working together to achieve best balance to stay cancer-free.

@ hi, right now I have recently started with New Chapter, the one with tiny tabs, starting with low dose and gradually increasing to make sure my system tolerates it well…my careful research gave me confidence in it. So far, so good.
