No diagnosis yet - neuropathy - post partum & 2 surgeries

Posted by chefalexandergs @chefalexandergs, Dec 20, 2023

My wife gave birth to our daughter back in late October but unfortunately developed many many complications in the 10 days after (illeus, pre-clamsia, suspicion of abscesses in abdominal area) which eventually led to a 2nd surgery early November where they did an PELVIC WASHOUT, APPENDECTOMY, LYSIS OF ADHESIONS, RESECTION OF MECKELS DIVERTICULUM, PARTIAL OMENECTOMY..

Fast Forward to the discharge date which took place 11/9, she was not feeling any of the pain; she started feeling this around 2 weeks ago after a prolonged seating in a chair at home. The day after discharge, we had to go back to the ER because one of her legs/foot was numb all of the sudden and we were advised to go to the ER asap to rule out DVT (it was ruled out after a leg sonogram, lumbar MRI, and a CAT scan of the pelvic). The DX we left the ER with was paraesthesia.

Unfortunately, the past 2 weeks have been extremely painful for her because she cannot lay down, walk, sit or even stand without pain. Pain level fluctuates depending on the effect of the ibuprofen she takes. We have been fighting with her OBGYN team to seek help until we finally were able to get a sonogram of her c-section incision because she was complaining about pain irradiating from both her pelvic bones, and also reflects down to her legs, glutes and sometimes even her arms. Thankfully, sonogram (pelvic) came back ok and so issues but pain of her lower back, pelvic and sometimes glutes is still prevalent.

All doctors keep telling us is that all this “nerve inflammation” will get better with time and that she needs to give it until her “12 week post partum period is over in January” which I find ridiculous because she is in a lot of pain and all they have done is give her pain medication which it helps but with side effects. There is no determining the root cause of her nerve pain issue”

We have gone to:

- physiatrist: claims her lumbar MRI looks good (even though the MRI calls for a minimal stenosis), and without even touching her said, her issue and pain is not coming from the lumbar area. Didn’t even make any recommendations on where that might be coming from, and just gave her a muscle relaxant which only work 1 time.

- Orthopedist: said the same thing: pain is not coming from lumbar area, he did perform some minor movement checks at least, and suggested physical therapy to strengthen her cores muscles and maybe some acupuncture. Gave a script for another muscle relaxer which she didnt take because it interacted with another medicine she was taking (which we told the orthopedist)

- Neurologist: we went to a neurologist this week (12/18) and explained the situation, he decided to proceed with several tests to rule out nerve injury and a MRI of the head (those are still yet to be completed) but he suspects that they will come back okay based on his assessment of all the supporting exams we provided. Since we explained that her main goal is to get to the root cause of this nerve pain and that she is in pain all day for the most part, he prescribed duloxetine once a day for a week, then 2 times a day after this week, unfortunately, my wife had some side effects and he advised to discontinue the medication (even though she was able to sleep the night for the first time in a while).
Since my wife was taking gabapentin 300mg before sporadically (when pain was too strong), but gave her hallucinations, he decided for a reduced dose to 100mg gabapentin and that is what she is on right now. Today is the first day taking it but so far no success relieving her pain.

- Pain medicine: We are seeing a pain med doctor tomorrow, in hopes that they can assist us in this journey so she can finally get better.

All this has taken a toll on her mental health bc she hasnt been able to take care of our daughter because of her pain.

My goal here today is to share our experience in hopes someone might have some insight into what might be going on based on the personal experience, and/or any suggestions on what we can do next or who to reach out to.

Thank you in advance for any advice you all can provide.

Hi @chefalexandergs,
I am so sorry for what your family is going through, it is just so wrong. Gabapentin made my son hallucinate and it was horrible and scary. Finding the correct doctor is so hard. Does your insurance company have any services for you? Some of the companies have nurses to help find the right type of doctor to go to. The stress created by all of this is not helping her heal, and with you helping her, hopefully some of this stress is relieved. In the mean time, you might look into a cranial sacral therapist, their skills are amazing, and have changed my life, so there is quality. There was a long trail of doctors that did not help or want to admit there was actually something wrong.
