Newly on alendronate.
I’ve taken one dose of alendronate weekly dose and have had nausea, burning in the stomach and reflux still after more than a week.( Esophageal cancer in the family)
Does anyone know if it will get better if I continue to take the next dose or if I should switch to Actonel lower dose?
I know it’s not the best for severe osteoporosis with 2 recent fractures but…?

Are you taking it as recommended? In the morning, plenty of water, stay upright (standing or sitting) for 30 minutes?
Tell your doctor.
Definitely. Even longer than the 30 min.
I will tell the doctor.
Thanks
It sounds as though this is your first Osteoporosis medication and you mentioned severe osteoporosis. Can you share more with us. Perhaps your age, deca scan results, whether you are seeing an endocrinologist, the rationale for alendronate first, your doctors plan for sequencing these medications (this is quite important). I am not a health care provider but will mention that the thinking seems to have changed about sequencing. There seems to be a move toward starting a patient on a bone builder first because a bisphosphonate like alendronate can effect the bone building work of a drug like tymlos. Forteo or evenity. Of course no two people are alike and so much depends on your health history. One of the things you will read often here is "do your own research".
Yes I agree. I see the reasoning behind bone builder first. While waiting to get a specialist on board this is what was offered first by family doctor. At least now I know I don’t react well to the alendronate after first dose. Was planning on using short term to stop fractures.
With recent vertebral fractures and low T scores it is recommended to have Anabolic therapy from 2023 guidelines. Kind of in limbo now as I would like to get the baseline testing done with a specialist to keep track.
Thanks for your helpful feedback.
Definitely let your doctor know about the reflux. I had to stop Fosamax as I suddenly got severe acid reflux after being on it for 9 months. It was prescribed by my PCP. She referred me to a Rheumatologist for the osteo and GI doctor. Took awhile to get the reflux under control and still on meds for that, so you may want to talk to your doctor about trying another med that is not an oral med. Had my 1st Reclast infusion last Sept and will have 2nd on next week. So far so good.
Wishing you the best in this journey!
What’s the minimum effective time to be on an oral bisphosphonate such as fosomax or Actonel ?
I am going to hate taking anything but I want to lock in any small gains I’ve had with Tymlos .
Does 6 months on a bisphosphonate do the trick?( I don’t want to do reclast)
Thank you. And the best to you too.
