newly diagnosed lymphedema 2.5 years post breast cancer, hand swelling
I had at least 15 underarm lymph nodes removed at the time of my mastectomy, all negative, but now, 2.5 yrs later, I've been diagnosed with lymphedema. It is only visible in my left hand, slight swelling. The physio says the treatment is to wear a compression sleeve and glove at least 10 hrs a day and that I am doomed to need at least the sleeve forever...(everyone says 'no cure').
I don't see any improvement in my hand when I wear the sleeve and glove, if anything it seems to increase what I notice in my hand, but the physio insists this is the only treatment to get the lymph to retreat back up the arm. Is anyone else experiencing lymphedema only in the hand or did yours only begin with the hand? So far my arm measurements are fine. It just seems so medieval to have to resort to these compression garments. Do they work for anyone?

@cashemire, Having to wear compression garments can definitely be a pain but it does help with my lymphedema in my legs. I've been wearing them for the past 6 or so years to control the swelling in my legs but it's mostly my right leg. I also try to exercise regularly which I think helps a little with the swelling.
Here is a video I found on the topic that you might find helpful.
Exercises for Arm Lymphedema - To Help Reduce Arm Swelling or Hand Swelling and Pain
Have you looked into exercise or physical therapy to see if it might help reduce the swelling?
many thanks for the video! i find swimming seems to help in my case, but the physio is really insisting on the compression garments.
As a newbie to (leg) lymphedema, the hard part is the reality of a life-long chronic disease that at best, will remain as-is vs worsening. On top of fear of cancer recurrence.
Thanks to all who share their experiences.
My hand is bandaged with finger wrap. No glove or sleeve at this stage but will get there eventually. You need lymphatic drainage massage by a specialist in that field. Find one in your city. They are few and far between.
I had 20 lymph nodes removed in 1998. A little bit of lymphedema in arm started up in 2002 and I wore occasional light compression. My hand blew up in 2007 and I've been wearing compression ever since. I am used to it of course, but it was hard to accept in the beginning. I've had 2 infections and one of them resulted in a hospitalization. There are doctors doing micro-surgery now with some success. I'm sure Mayo has that service and probably some others. I think the night compression sleeves work better than the daytime ones. I've chosen to stick with compression and occasional PT. I'm sorry that you're struggling with this situation. I also get a swollen hand and some numbness from the arm compression. Not fun, but stuck with it. I would suggest that you follow what your docs are suggesting, and prevent it from getting worse. Good luck!
