New night time indigestion

Posted by nanamag4 @nanamag4, Feb 1 10:06am

I am 70 years old and I eat a fairly healthy diet. Lately I’ve been experiencing indigestion at night that wakes me up and I have to get up and sit in my recliner. When I try to lay down I get pain and sometimes have acid reflux. I never know when this is going to happen. There doesn’t seem to be any common denominator. Any ideas?

My pulmonologist has prescribed Famotidine 20 mg. I take one tablet morning and one at night. I also have elevated the head of my bed about 2”. It keeps my acid reflux in check . Talk to your doctor . Blessed Be, Crystal

Try eating nothing after 5:00. We are so accustomed to late dinners, but as we age, our digestion slows. And our enzymes change. At 75, I eat only fruit after 4.

Elevating the head of your bed should help. A wedge under the mattress or even sleeping on one of those cushion wedges might be helpful. Sugar, spicy, caffeine…these are things that aggravate esophageal reflux. Sit up for a couple hours after meals. Don’t lay down even to just watch TV. Sit up and let gravity help. Good luck. If it continues see your Dr as acid can be very eroding to the mucous membranes and there are more problems with that.

A ct scan with contrast of your stomach areas. That found some problems I had.

Have you had an upper endoscopy.

My guess is you are eating something that you no longer digest well and it is not moving on through the digestive tract quickly enough. Also do not eat anything within 4 hours of laying down since the esophageal sphincter does not close as tightly in older folks.
The Japanese have been prescribing zinc carnosine for years to heal the stomach/gut lining and help with digestion. You take two capsules 1/2 hr before a meal, 2 times a day. So 4 caps total a day.
This is a link to the one I take: https://www.doctorsbest.com/products/doctor-s-best-pepzin-gi-zinc-l-carnosine-complex-120-veggie-caps-2467
One of the many articles on zinc carnosine: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2210740122000912
If I get an acid feeling to my stomach after a meal I will take one extra zinc carnosine capsule or a capsule of powdered ginger root. The ginger root is excellent for helping the contents of your gut move on. When I eat gluten it sits like a ball in my gut and the ginger really helps push it down my digestive tract.
Too much ginger can cause loose stool so don't go overboard and if you are on blood thinners be careful. Zinc carnosine is considered safe at 4 caps/day.
I have never had a gastroenterologist or primary care Doctor admit they know anything about zinc carnosine, they are still practicing in the Dark Ages and seem to prefer prescription meds.
Hope this helps!
