Neuropathy pain level change after foot/ankle surgery?

Posted by jeaiken @jeaiken, Sep 11, 2025

Did anyone experience a pain level change from peripheral neuropathy after having foot or ankle surgery. My surgeon has made me aware that I may experience a worsening of pain from my peripheral neuropathy after undergoing scheduled foot surgery for "claw toe/hammer toe" surgery. Right now my pain level is manageable but I do not want to do anything to make it worse. Any comments regarding this is appreciated.

I had a hip replacement after having had a PN diagnosis for several years. The hip surgery did not change my PN symptoms. Hope you get enough info to decide what is the appropriate path forward for you.

I have had idiopathic small fiber neuropathy for over 30 years. I partially tore 2 a tendon in each ankle a few years ago. Unfortunately this did flare my neuropathy pain. My cold laser and anodyne therapies usually control my neuropathy pain. However they did not help with the injury neuropathy pain. I took Cymbalta but this did not help either. I used to take neurontin for my neuropathy, and I wonder if this would have helped. I would ask your neurologist for recommendations. The problem is that the injury increased the nerve inflammation.

Thank you for the insight. It will be useful when I talk with my neurologist prior to surgery.

I am thankful to read this today. I had 5 foot surgeries since 2019 and my neuropathy since 2015 from my Dermoid cyst on my spinal cord theoretically.

My foot surgeon never mentioned this could worsen my neuropathy but my neuropathy has worsened but could also be age related and or from the radiation treatments after spine surgery no. 3

I went through laser treatments earlier this year which helped and added supplements which have helped significantly.

I only use St. John's Wort pellets with Organic Frankensence oil topically for pain during the day and now and again Baclofen, a muscle relaxer, for relief at bedtime. No more Gabaphentin or drugs with negative side effects.
