My RARP experience
I would like to share my experience about my RARP. I was 57 (turned 58 two days ago) and had PSA of 4.3 and was diagnosed with GS 3+3=6 in Nov, 2024.
I had a muti-parametric MRI first which showed three lesions and a transperineal biospy that gave the GS. After discussing with my doctor, reading a lot of pubMed papers, listening to folks here, I decided to get the surgery done.
Six weeks ago I had the surgery. Final pathology was 3+4=7 with 6 to 10% of pattern 4. Yesterday had my first post op PSA test and it came as less than 0.01.
I went to Vanderbilt University and my surgeon is a wonderful doctor. He listened to me, explained how I am a good candidate for AS and gave me reading materials (NCCN Guidelines etc ) to understand my choices, especially about AS. I came up with a decision chart that helped me make a decision. It is a series of Yes or No questions. Each Yes took me to the next one.
I have control of my bladder and don't wear pads like Depends but just to be safe I wear a thin one when I go out. Had a few episodes of involuntary leaks (about two three drops) mostly during afternoons or evenings but my nurse said it will get better over time. I do Kegels three times a day.
I want to thank all the folks that post their experience and especially appreciate @jeffmarc , @heavyphil @survivor5280 and others for the encouraging posts.
Hope my experience helps others who are trying make a decision about surgery.

This is wonderful news! π your experience really gives me a boost of hope regarding my upcoming surgery. π Thank you so much for sharing this. π If I could give you a hug I would. π I'm glad you are doing well. π
good luck with your surgery! One thing that really helped me is a breakaway boxer shorts that I used while the catheter was on. It was easier to put it on and take it off during those 10 days. i got it on amazon
I was 70 when I had NS RARP 06/2024. I also had a little stress incontinence at first when I went back to the gym at 6 weeks, but it went away pretty quickly over the first 3 months. Around the 5th month I really turned a corner and stopped worrying about it. Now just past month 9 and I'm fully continent and confident and back to normal for urination. In fact, without my mild BPH prostate my urination is actually better than before. I do have mild ED but it's getting better and I can have intercourse when my wife with the help of viagra. It's slowly improving as well, but much more slowly. Best wishes.
