My feet are swelling. No diabetes. Any ideas?

Posted by gramma3155 @gramma3155, Aug 23 2:07pm

I have cologinous colitis & pancreatic issues. Will be getting tested soon for who knows what else! Now this. The swelling just started a week or so ago & I'm quite concerned. Any suggestions?

If it's ankles it could be to do with heart or it could just be the time of day, a podiatrist told me feet swell in the afternoon, a good time to try on shoes!

They stayed swelled all day. It's new to me . I appreciate your response, but I think it's something more.

Hi @gramma3155, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I am sorry you are dealing with colon and pancreatic issues. The diagnostic process is stressful and waiting for even more testing has to unsettling for you. You’ve come to the right place to connect and share with others as you work through dealing with swelling in your feet, as well as everything else you have going on.

It may be helpful to pay attention to when your ankles swell and if anything helps. It could be as simple as being more active or reducing the amount of salt you consume. You may have read this but if not, it is helpful to know more about symptoms and treatment for edema: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/edema/symptoms-causes/syc-20366493

I notice the linked Mayo Clinic Overview does specifically recommend making an appointment with your doctor if you have swelling, stretched or shiny skin, or skin that holds a dimple after being pressed, and to contact them right away for specific symptoms: shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, or chest pain.

You mention for feet stay swelled all day. When do they start swelling, and do you also have pain? Does elevating your feet help? Or, perhaps you have changed medications recently?

I had that one summer. I couldn’t fit into my shoes and wore flip flop slippers to the doctor. They checked me out and put me on some furosemide and then I went back for a recheck. Definitely worth calling the pcp, going to urgent care or calling a nurse line unless the nurse like is worthless like where I live.

Hi Gramma3155,
My mother had problems with her feet swelling when she got older and had pulmonary emphysema. In her case she was retaining water and the doctor put her on water pills. He also suggested that she drink plenty of water which is good for everyone to do. I would suggest you see your doctor just to be sure what is going on and how to treat it. You have enough to deal with already. You don't need anymore problems.
I wish you the best.

This happened to me and my podiatrist suggested I soak my feet/ankles in cool water and then keep them elevated above heart level. So I did that and it helped. Also cutting down on salt also helps
