MRI for nerve pain: L4 and L5

Posted by user_chf56161a @user_chf56161a, Dec 24, 2018

My fusion and titanium L-4 was done Nov 14, I’ve had nerve pain in my left hip, thigh, shin and foot since. Pain Dr ordered an mri. The results weren’t good. It said there’s a suspicious pin and L-4 is slipping back on L-5. I’m so sad, but can’t live with nerve pain. I see my surgeon on Jan 9th. Have any of you had this?

Sorry to hear you are still in pain. I had a similar surgery 20 years ago. Fortunately, it solved my problem. I also had titanium put in my back. Good luck

That’s what I had L-4 is titanium. I don’t know what things went wrong. I’ll be back at Mayo in January hopefully they’ll fix it or say the mri I had dont here is wrong.

I had that problem where the l4 l5 was rubbing on a nerve. Had stem cells injected and in 4 weeks i was good. Do my stretching every day and have had no pain. The stem cells were my stem cells. Be careful who you deal with as their are a lot of bad clinics out there.

@win sturgeon That is great I have same problem but so far Dr,s just fluffed me off glad you found relieve Did you have the burning pain inflammation in thighs before the stem cells?

REPLY

No, just the burn in the back. I was going to a center who treated me with steroids but relief ended up being shorter and shorter. Tried the stem cells after 2 friends had the same problem and had surgery which failed them. Took 4 weeks of walking, sitting, some gardening. Basically i gave up riding my bike and mowing the lawn for that time.

I saw my surgeon at Mayo, my new disk has slipped a little and one of the pins moved. He decided to let me go home and call in 2 weeks since I’m improving and can walk, squat, real good. If it heals like that and I’m still better then no surgery if it gets worse another big surgery.

Hi!
I am so sorry for all the pain you are having.
I had an X-Lift Fusion on L3/L4 in October.
The recover was HORRIBLE and it took a full 4 months before the pain subsided to a livable annoyance.
When I got up in the morning, first thing I had to do was to get into my chair.
I needed an ice pack on my left thigh and groin area, along with a heating pad on my lower back.
I couldn't understand this since when I had my cervical surgery (replacement of C5/6) it was a snap.
When doing lumbar surgery, they move around thigh muscles and cut it in order to get to the spine.
I did not know this and when I went for my first post-op (just aa week or so out), I was ready to slap my doctor.
I asked why he didn't tell me and I didn't ask (me bad).
He thought if I knew how bad the recovery would be, I wouldn't do it.
I now see why he did the cervical surgery first!!!

One thing that is VERY important, is to continue to baby your back!
Many of us start to feel better and resume our activities as if nothing every happened.
Wrong!!!
Although x-rays and MRIs will show healing, it can take up to 2 YEARS before the back is REALLY HEALED!!!!!
That being the case, I DON'T DO THE FOLLOWING:
bend
lift
carry (noting more than the weight of a gallon of milk)
sudden moves
hyper-extending
twist, etc.

I have been PAIN FREE for the first time in over a decade.
I have develped pain in my right hip area.
The PT and doc think it is because of the way I've been walking in order to compensate.

I tell you all thins to keep in mind.
