more requests than they can handle

there is one big problem with Mayo - from the patient's side of view.
And that is that they get much more requests than they can handle.
I didn't find this on Mayo-webpages, but it was leaked here in the forum.

So, I must "compete" with all the other patients to nake it more
desirable for Mayo to prefer me rather than others.
How to do this, where/how can I learn this ?
Usually, in this economic system it is balanced by prices
but doctors don't publish their current prices and they
don't mention them, when you ask. Part of it may be
shared by insurances but this is all too complicated for patients.

@bsi15, you're right that not everyone receives an appointment at Mayo Clinic. Like all major academic medical centers, specializing in complex and serious medical conditions, Mayo Clinic has more requests for appointments than available openings. Appointments at Mayo Clinic are prioritized on the basis of medical need. Appointment availability depends on the nature, complexity, and urgency of the medical problem and Mayo Clinic's ability to help as determined by a Mayo Clinic doctor(s). For less complex conditions, the availability of care closer to home is also considered.

It is Mayo Clinic's goal to provide the best care each patient needs. However Mayo does not want people to incur additional costs for evaluation or travel if Mayo experts do not feel they can offer care that is different from what they’re already receiving.

How does one get appts at the Mayo Medical School? Do the advanced "students" there actually see patients or is their patient contact largely through the hospitals? I assume that in order to get a referral to the med school that the affliction would have to be a teaching case.

I recall being in a city with a dental school and having work done there. The work necessary had to be something other than say a routine filling.

@bajjerfan, good question. Medical schools and academic medical centers do not work like dental colleges. Appointments are not made at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. Rather trainees work alongside experts in the clinic itself. Mayo Clinic typically has more than 1700 active trainees disbursed throughout the departments of all our locations. Trainees are called residents or fellows.

A resident is a graduate of medical school who is taking part in a graduate medical education (GME) program, continuing their education and training in a specialized field of medicine. Residency for this group of doctors could last from 3 to 7 years, depending upon their specialization. Residents at Mayo Clinic are supervised by our staff doctors. The level of supervision varies depending upon how much experience each resident has gained.

A fellow is a graduate of medical school who is already finished with their residency years. Doctors pursue a fellowship to gain expertise in a specialized area of medicine, such as transplant surgery. During a fellowship, a doctor follows a specialist closely to get even more education in a single field of medicine. Not all physicians complete a fellowship, but those who wish to be the top doctors in their field pursue at least another full year of education beyond their residency.
