MMP-13 enzyme and neuropathy

Posted by jillkellyauthor @jillkellyauthor, 15 hours ago

I've been researching this through PubMed and discovered that this enzyme, which is natural to the body, is harmful to the sheath on nerves if it is overactive (putting out too much enzyme). Inhibitors are an area of study. Some people have found relief with combinations of green tea extract, resveratrol, curcumin, and turmeric. I just ordered some. I'll keep you posted. Jill

I do like green tea but haven't made it a habit and I did take turmeric for 5+ years after my neuropathy diagnosis but not sure if it helped. Sadly I had to stop taking turmeric when I had a blood clot and had to start on blood thinners for life. It will be interesting to find out if it provides some relief for you.

I am on blood thinners and it is not recommended for me to take curcumin or tumeric. If anyone has been advised of a substitute please let me know

@berthamincox I don't know if there's a good alternative supplement for curcumin/turmeric, but there are many foods with anti-inflammatory properties. Harvard Health website has a recent article called Foods that Fight Inflammation. And there are many others when you do an online search.

@berthamincox, I agree with @jacqincalifornia that anti-inflammatory foods are a good place to start. Here's one from the Mayo Clinic Health System - https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/want-to-ease-chronic-inflammation
