Menopause treatment options as a breast cancer survivor?

Posted by yt1978 @yt1978, Mar 28, 2023

I had estrogen positive breast cancer 11 years ago and had a double mastectomy then took tamoxifen for 10 years. Shortly after I had a total hysterectomy. Shortly after that and since (past 6 months) I have been suffering from extreme joint pain and stiffness. Gynecologist recommends HRT while Oncologist does not. I am scared to do anything to increase risk of breast cancer reoccurring but also scared of osteoporosis, heart disease, dementia and continued pain and suffering by not having estrogen in my body. I am 44 and would like to think I can still have a long and healthy life, but feel paralyzed as I can’t get a medical opinion that gives me confidence that I’m doing the right thing. Appreciate any advice you may have?

Did you find any information? Just wondering what you ended up doing.. I have been recommended not to ever take HRT (I have a high BC risk).
I want to take it!
Hope your going ok

Hi, @annaanderson, and welcome.

Here's some information from Mayo Clinic about the benefits and risks of HRT https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/menopause/in-depth/hormone-therapy/art-20046372. And the American Cancer Society offers some great tips for relieving menopause symptoms without HRT (https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/breast-cancer/living-as-a-breast-cancer-survivor/menopausal-hormone-therapy-after-breast-cancer.html).

You mentioned that you're at higher risk of developing breast cancer. Have you identified which type?

Hey there!
Same here ! I was diagnosed in 2006, stage II, ductal carcinoma, ER+ with 2 involved nodes . I have severe vaginal atrophy. Speak to your doctors about “Osphena” it comes in 40 or 60 mg .
Supposedly, it will not put you at risk for reoccurrence. Formulated to work only in vaginal area .
I just found out about it and I am in the process of reviewing this possibility with my oncologist and others.
I hear you ! No matter how many years go by, I will always live in fear of a reoccurrence.
All the best🙏🏻
