Mayo Clinic (Rochester) & Low Dose Reclast

Posted by 19kcm56 @19kcm56, 1 day ago

I have received notification that my Mayo Clinic doctor has left. I have not been assigned another doctor as of yet and I am not sure if I am allowed to request a specific endocrinologist. But just in case I can choose, I am wondering if anyone has an endocrinologist at Mayo Rochester who was agreeable to doing a lower dose of Reclast.

I recently had my 8th set of Evenity injections. My former endocrinologist's treatment plan was to transition to zoledronic acid 5 mg provided once every 12-18 months for 3 doses prior to consideration of bisphosphonate holiday.

Thanks to everyone on this support group!

I find doctors almost always start treatment, of any kind, with the current “standard of care”, which for Reclast is 5mg/3 yrs. But may be open to deviating from that if there is a reason.
Sometimes they don’t know the whole story of us, so they use the generalized proven treatment.

I was started on alendronate, which I did not like because my stomach would grumble all morning with irritation. Could I have lived with that? Probably so, but I stopped after 7 doses and went back to the endocrinologist. As we were talking I happened to mention that I had a bout with conjunctivitis (eye) that resolved itself after a few days. Well, turns out conjunctivitis is an odd, but important, side effect of alendronate. And it portends bigger future problems. She immediately suggested Reclast which I am much happier to take.

So if there are reasons that you’re concerned about Reclast, or health issues that haven’t made it into your medical record but are still potential issues, be sure to discuss that. As long as there is a good reason to deviate from the standard of care many doctors will do it.
