Malabsorption of Calcium

Posted by pamelia @pamelia, 6 days ago

Long history of osteoporosis most recent treatment Prolia. Multiple spinal compression fractures August of 2023. Recently had surgery for Hyperparathyroid two adenomas removed as well as thyroid. PTH went down initially. Now months later elevated PTH and urine calcium highest ever in 8 years, blood calcium normal. Also just tested positive for Celiac by positive Anti Gliadin IGA. I have follow up with Endo Dr. soon, anyone else dealing with these issues.

I have osteoporosis and get Prolia injection every 6 months. I broke bones in my foot (toes & ankle) many years ago but haven’t had any other fractures since then. I don’t have any parathyroid issues that I know of but I had hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease which was treated with medication and continues to be monitored. I am diabetic and have related stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both my endocrinologist & nephrologist monitor my calcium. It is currently normal but has been either low or high in the past. My endocrinologist has me on a calcium supplement at present. I was tested for Celiac once, but nothing turned up. How are you feeling? What symptoms and concerns have led you to an endocrinologist?

I’ve actually seen 4 endocrinologists with each one referring me elsewhere when they exhausted their expertise. Originally my symptom was extreme fatigue. I’ve been on almost every med for osteoporosis yet my bone density kept declining. After my spontaneous spine fracture and some ribs the endocrinologist I had then finally referred me to a surgeon to remove my diseased parathyroids. Post surgery I feel much better and have a bone density coming up to see if there is improvement. But considering my recent labs I’m still spilling all the calcium out in my urine.
