Magnesium Glycinate – Questions and Experiences

Posted by ella89 @ella89, Jan 15 4:00am

Hi everyone,

I’ve started taking magnesium glycinate from AOB Nutrition and have been using it to support sleep and stress. I’m curious to hear what’s worked for others:

What dosage do you find effective?
Do you take it at a specific time of day?
Have you noticed any side effects or differences between brands?
Are there other reliable sources you’d recommend?
Looking forward to your insights. Thanks!

Hi Ella89,
I don't know about the Magnesium you are taking, but I have been taking Triple Magnesium Complex for several years without any side effects. The Triple Magnesium has 400 mg of each different type of Magnesium -- Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Aspartate. I don't remember, right now, which does what, but I know I take this at night about one hour prior to being ready to go to bed and it relaxes me and helps me to get a good sound sleep, and upon arising it also helps to keep my bowels regular, which I take some medication for stomach flare-ups that can really constipate. The third Magnesium helps with preventing the ungodly, painful charlie horses I get from time-to-time when working in the yard and not drinking enough or not getting enough electrolytes to keep things balanced in my body.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Triple Magnesium Complex! It’s interesting to hear how the combination of different magnesium types works for you. I can definitely relate to the need for relaxation and better sleep—I’ve found magnesium glycinate really helps me wind down at night without any stomach discomfort.

It’s also good to know that the magnesium helps with muscle cramps and regularity for you. I’ve heard similar things from others who deal with charlie horses or constipation issues. It seems like magnesium is such a versatile supplement for so many body functions.

Out of curiosity, have you noticed if one type of magnesium in your blend works better for certain issues than the others? I’ve been exploring options to balance better sleep support with muscle recovery.

Thanks again for the insight—it’s always helpful to hear what’s working for others!

Hi Ella89,
I think having the three of them together makes them work better overall. I know whichever one it is that helps to keep the bowels regular has to jump through hoops for me when I have to take Carafate when something I ate or drank caused a fire in my stomach. I only take 1/2 a Carafate, but it really constipates, but the Magnesium does not let me down. If I eat cheese it may take a couple of days to get things moving, and when I upped the amount of Alpha Lipoic Acid and didn't know that turns the bowel to cement, and it did, it took about 3 days to get regular again after going back to the lighter amount of Alpha Lipoic.
I was on a bus trip to Canada several years ago to some big event for plays. I had never had a Charlie Horse in all my years. Not only a long bus ride, but then meals and then one play and dinner afterwards, so a lot of sitting. I woke up the next morning and stretched while laying in bed and I was hit with a Charlie Horse in the calf of my leg that brought me to tears. It may have only lasted a minute but it seemed like an hour before that pain let up and the muscle went from rock hard to pliable again. It remained sore for 2-3 days afterwards.
I said something at breakfast and found that three others had the same problem on this trip. Another woman gave me some Magnesium Cream for rubbing into the muscle and told me to read up on Magnesium supplements. I did and from time to time if I am working outside in the summer I will get spasms in my shoulder blades when I have been sweating a lot and not replacing the electrolytes in my system.
The one for sleeping rarely ever lets me down. If I have had a busy day and nap when I wasn't planning on it, too late in the day, I may be up longer before I can get to sleep, but this gets me into a deep sleep. I didn't even hear the guy come to plow my neighbor's driveway last night, so I really knocked out. Without the magnesium I sleep lightly and wake up to sounds all night long so my sleep was awfully restless. This stuff was a Godsend for me. Good luck Ella.

I take magnesium-L- Threonate that I bought from Amazon. All others give me diarrhea. The brand is Magtein.
Recently I started using an under the desk exerciser. It is addictive and I pedal away for hours as I watch TV. I haven't had to use an electric heating pad under my legs when I go to bed at night to prevent the cramps any longer. I'm 83.

Hi, I just started taking Mag Glycinate a month ago. It was to see if it could help me sleep better after years of working 24 hr shifts. Even after retiring it hasn't gotten much better. After 2 or 3 days I noticed a moderate improvement in getting to sleep faster and when waking up in the middle of the night which is most nights I could get back to sleep in a hour or less instead of 2 or 3. That wasn't the only benefit however because it helped with regularity going to the bathroom. The biggest difference I noticed however was with ED that in my case was mild but it fully restored things to how they were many years ago. Being curious I researched this and apparently it relaxes not only muscles but arteries even though it is not a vaso dialator. I was taking 350mg a day. 2 tablets in the morning and 2 at night about 1 hr before bed. Glycinate is the most absorbable form. I took another brand that had a mix of malate, citrate and glycinate just to see if any different and it worked but not as well. Oxide is the worst form and only 5% absorbable and several forms in between with glycinate at 80%. Each form does something a little different in the body the way I understand it so a trial and error sorta thing but 50% of people are deficient in it.
