Lupron and sudden low blood pressure?

Posted by joeck @joeck, Aug 24 2:58pm

I'm on my second round of Lupron. On for one year after RALP, one year off, now in second quarter back on. I deal with mild hypertension, and am on Losartan for that. Occasionally I have a mid-day severe dip in blood pressure that leads to light-headedness and extreme weakness. Rest improves that. I'm trying to discern if it could be a side-effect of the Lupron. Yes, I'm well aware of all the standard side-effects and generally tolerate them well. Thanks!

Yes, Lupron (leuprolide) can cause a sudden, severe decrease in blood pressure, though this is a rare side effect. Lupron can also cause general hypotension (low blood pressure).

Discussions on medical forums, such as the Mayo Clinic Connect, include patient reports of experiencing sudden mid-day drops in blood pressure and light-headedness while taking Lupron.

A sudden drop in blood pressure caused by Lupron can lead to serious symptoms. If you experience any of the following, seek immediate medical attention:
Fainting
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Fast or irregular breathing
Weakness
Trouble breathing

For six decades, my BP was 123/78. After starting on the Abiraterone, it was 145/90 for about a year, & then jumped to 190/??. My Oncologist put me on the Losartan, which brought it back down to near normal for the next 18 months. Then I went off of all ADT, & my BP is back to normal.

I don't remember any lightheadedness.

I forgot to mention that I was on Lupron the whole time I was on Abiraterone (2.5 years).

I received a 6 month injection similar to lupron 6 weeks ago and recently noticed my blood pressure was much lower than last year. Google seemed to indicate HIGH blood pressure as a symptom, so I chalked it up to my better diet, more consistent exercise and more casual attitude towards work after diagnosis. Now wondering if it's just the drug after all...

I Googled exactly the phrase from Jeff above "sudden mid-day drops in blood pressure and light-headedness while taking Lupron" which yielded some corroborating evidence - essentially it seems it might affect us either way. I'm not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that my problem is Lupron, but even the possibility of finding a cause can be reassuring. Thanks!
