Diagnosis DCIS: Anyone have 5-day radiation treatment?
I am both progesterone and estrogen negative, duct was in Situ and 4cm in length, grade 3 and Stage 0…..
Can you verify that Mayo’s is pro the 5day radiation method over the longer length
I am truly confused over the best method to treat this and, of course, have various people giving opinions. My Radiation Oncologist will go either way…
Also worried about how to make sure my heart and lung is not touched during this….
Thank You
Sabra

I don’t believe it is a matter of one over the other. To be clear, I am not speaking from the Mayo Breast Clinic.
I saw this question posed in another conversation with some very helpful responses. This is more a question of individual cases. Each cancer gets its own “best” recommendation, each patient has their own values of quality. Time, cost, travel, convenience etc. are all considerations and each person looks at those things differently.
You need to discuss this with your provider, your family, your friends, then if you still are unsure, maybe a second opinion is in order.
I had mine in my left and no the radiation doesn't touch your lungs and heart. That's why they have you breath deep and then release to ensure they don't touch those organs. I didn't have mine done with Mayo because of the distance. You should do your research and listen to what the doctor recommends if based on your research what the doctor recommends makes sense then go with it and if not then ask them questions. Mayo is really good at listening at least I know my provider is. Again I didn't do the radiation at Mayo, but I have my oncologist at Mayo.
I had left breast radiation - they have you hold your breath but also the machine shuts down and stops immediately if you don’t hold your breath. I did mine down at MD Anderson in Houston
