Low appetite
Hello,
Just wondering if anyone with large fiber peripheral neuropathy is experiencing low appetite. For the last two weeks, I have been getting full after eating a few bites especially at breakfast and lunch.
I appreciate anyone commenting on their eating habits.
Thank you,
gus

Neuropathy causes gastroparsis (slow digestion) checked by a GI doctor. Nausea and sometimes vomiting is part of it. No red meat hard to digest. Six small meals a day. When it gets really bad some people have to use a food processor to help digest their food.
Yup, gastroparesis is a known consequence of peripheral neuropathy: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9235138/.
In general, I agree with artemis1886: basically, you follow the dietary recommendations given to people who are recovering from bariatric surgery, which is actually intended to reduce appetite and slow digestion. Lots of fluids (avoid dehydration), drink fluids between meals (not with meals, where they can keep you from getting the nutrition you need), several small meals (small = until you feel full; six is just a guide, not a mandate; eat slowly), prioritize protein (after protein, prioritize fiber, whole fruits, and vegetables), avoid filling up with empty calories (sugar, anything made with white flour), take a multivitamin (with the least possible B6, which can make neuropathy worse), and ask your doctor about adding calcium+vit D, B12, B1, and/or iron (if you take iron, try to separate it from any calcium foods or supplements). Exercise also helps, including household chores you do on your feet, walking with a friend, etc.
Make sure your doctor schedules regular blood tests for calcium, iron, and the B vitamins, so you know if your supplement regime is working.
Alternatively or in addition, see if you can make an appointment with a dietician or nutritionist with training or experience dealing with gastroporesis or bariatric surgery patients. Unfortunately, given insurance reimbursement rates, this can be more easily said than done.
For some people, acupuncture can also help.
You are basically changing some pretty deep habits, so it's entirely normal to take a while to figure out how to make it work for you.
If you are vegan or vegetarian, getting enough protein may be hard enough that you may want to incorporate a protein shake into your regime -- not the commercial stuff that is mostly chemicals and sugar, but something home made using the protein supplement (eg, whey) of your choice plus something with fiber (eg, whole fruit).
You might consider cannabis as a solution. Cancer patients use it for both appetite and nausea.
Hello,
Thank you for your comment.
My appetite is fine and I do get hungry as always; however, as soon as I start eating, I get full after a few bite. For example, I start a plate at lunch and finish eating it at dinner. I just get full fast.
Thanks again and have a serene day,
gus
