Losing weight and pain on right side radiating to my back

Posted by shelbym @shelbym, Aug 23 10:56pm

In 2019 I went down to 108 lbs. I had annoying pain on my right side radiating to my back. I also suddenly had Raynaud’s. I gained the weight back and all symptoms left.
2025 I’m loosing weight again, I’ve lost 22 lbs. my Raynaud’s is back and that annoying side pain.
Does anyone know why I would be in pain from losing weight? I get the Raynaud’s. My blood vessel shrinks with weight loss fine. I can live with that.
This pain on my side is harder though. Beside it hurting and being annoying, I don’t know if it’s serious.

I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts. I’m going to get in with my gastroenterologist as well.

Thank you!

Pls do get to a GI. Believe it or not, it could have something to do with your pancreas. So ask about that!

I hope you get answers soon. You may need abdominal ultrasound, MRI, endoscopy, colonoscopy, and HIDA scan to check gallbladder function. With up and down weight/weight gain/weight loss, there seems to be something going on. It would be good to evaluate your thyroid function, too. Do you have any other symptoms other than weight changes, Raynauds, and right sided pain?

No, that’s it. I have sent a message via the portal to my gastroenterologist. Will have to wait for his reply. I was wondering if loosing weight caused anyone else to have pain like that. It’s the second time for me and I just don’t get it. Very frustrating. Being a healthy weight is important, at what cost though?

@shelbym
If you lost weight quickly and gained weight back quickly, that could cause gallbladder and/or kidney stones which can be painful.

I had same symptoms. Found that a regular gentle laxative helped to keep abdomen soft. Also, started exercising to strengthen core muscles. I also have a L4-5 nerve impingement that explains the back pain. See what Gastroenterology doctor says.

Hi, @shelbym - It sounds like you are very self-aware. I noted you said you have Raynaud's, but I wonder if you also have a digestive system-related diagnosis?

Also, @shelbym - if you've not already checked out some of the discussions on Raynaud's on Mayo Clinic Connect, here is one you might start with:

I am because I’ve had to be. No one can figure out my digestive issues. Not even Mayo. I’ve kind of given up. I’m just learning to live with the pain.

I have constant diarrhea. Stool softener would be a no no for me. Thank you for taking the time to suggest though. I truly appreciate it. Strengthening my core muscles is always a good thing. I will try that!
