Looking for suggestions on post RALP ileus constipation management

Posted by parkerf18 @parkerf18, 2 days ago

1 week post RALP. discharged day 2, readmitted same day, diagnosed with possible ileus. 3 additional hospital days with IV only for 2 days, clear liquids day 3. Bowel movements day 3, Discharged. Ingesting anything other than clear liquids is still causing abdominal pain and irregular, minimal bowel movements. Still taking the Polyethylene Glycol and the Docusate ( 2x/daily/both). Had to take a stimulant laxative (ex-lax) one time to get past a days worth of no movement,.
Any suggestions on diet and medication management would be appreciated . Thank you.

It seems that you are doing all the right things to keep the bowels moving, at least.
This seems to be very common after abdominal surgery - yes, those robotic arms pierce your body and snake around your insides…
If you see my recent post about nerve damage after surgery, please don’t get discouraged; it may take a little longer for your insides to calm down, and nothing more.
Try to keep to the hospital ‘soft diet’ and very slowly introduce more solid foods as your symptoms subside. I would steer clear of foods very high in fiber (or raw veggies) for now (the MiraLax has you covered) since this could trigger pain.

All the recommended things didn’t work. I purchased Equate Senna from Walmart and it worked wonders. Good luck.

I did not have RARP (my husband did) BUT I had case of acute ileitis (with unknown cause).

I had no constipation and I am wondering if your constipation is a separate issue and a side effect of surgery and medications, supplements or wrong diet that you are having at the moment : ( ?

If ileitis did cause constipation than it must be very serious stage (level) of inflammation present or perhaps even some scar tissue that caused narrowing of your guts : (((. Did they do any imaging ? If not you need to have ultrasound or abdominal CT to check what is going on with your guts and ASAP. The colonoscopy could be helpful but since you are still recovering from surgery it might be just too much if CT or ultrasound do not show anything.

Now, diet for ileitis is very bland and low in fiber which is contradictory to what you need to stop constipation. Definitely do not use any Sena !!!! It is VERY irritating for guts - it is how it works - it irritates guts to cramp and move fecal matter forward and it is not healthy for regular guts, not to mention inflamed ones.

Stick with cooked veggies that are low in fiber and fruits ( yes cooked fruits), you can eat only banana as fresh fruit and BTW banana is very calming for guts. You need a lot of food with soluble fiber but low in any insoluble fiber and absolutely stay away from popcorn, chips, cookies, nuts, pomegranate or any "sharp" in texture foods.

If you have any pasta or rice or breads (which are gentle on guts but are highly constipating) use gentle laxatives like Milk of Magnesia or Colace.

Go easy on meat except fish and roasted chicken.

Chicken broth does wonders for guts, so I would strongly suggest eating home made chicken soup every day and also take high quality probiotoc supplement. Drink gentle herbal teas and water a lot (so you stay hydrated). Avoid alcohol at all cost, and coffee as much as possible until you get well.

If you are still taking strong pain medications (codein or similar) STOP ! They are tremendous constipating.

Wishing you fast and complete recovery 🍀🌺 and sending healing vibes .

Hoping you are able to get exercise, walking as much as you can. If not able to get outside yet, then walk around the house. Day after my surgery I walked up two flights of stairs, next was walking around the block (even with catheter), then soon was walking 2 miles daily. Of course, only do what you are able. Exercise is beneficial to our body in so many ways. Also, drink lots of water. Wishing you a speedy and full recovery!
