Looking for guidance regarding bilateral symmetric sensory motor axon

Posted by bag553 @bag553, 21 hours ago

Hello - After almost 2 years of recurring falls following a complicated heart attack and "stroke-like" event, my 74year old husband recently suffered a traumatic brain injury, likely caused by orthostatic hypotension ( a fairly recent problem). In the rehab hospital, doctors ordered an EMG, which showed bilateral symmetric sensory motor axon loss polyneuropathy. The neurologist he saw last week ordered more bloodwork (serum protein electrophoresis, immunofixation, serum, ANA IFA screen w/ reflex to titer and Pattern and Reumatoid Factor). He has already had blood tests for vitamin deficiencies. The neurologist didn't schedule another appointment until 6 months from now. What can we do in the meantime? Should he see movement disorders specialist? He currently has in-home PT, T and Speech/Cognition therapy 2x week.
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

When you get the results of that recently-ordered blood work I think would be a time to find out what the results mean. Do you know why those tests were ordered? To rule something in? or out? That would be a good time for finding out more, in my thinking.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, which I truly appreciate. My husband had the bloodwork done this morning. My impression was that the neurologist ordered the blood tests both to rule in and to rule out. I also reached out to his PM & R doctor to request an appointment to see her and get her opinion about what she thinks is going on.

Hello @bag553, I would like to add my welcome along with @joanland and others. Hoping you can connect with other members who may be able to share some additional suggestions. I did a quick search of Connect and found a few other discussions mentioning orthostatic hypotension and neuropathy and thought you might like to scan through them to see if the symptoms sound similar to what your husband is experiencing. Here's the link that lists the discussions and member comments - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/?search=orthostatic+hypotension+and+neuropathy.

Thanks so much for reaching out, John, and for suggesting that I check out the link for orthostatic hypotension and neuropathy, which I will do shortly.
