Lifting weights while on ADT: hitting a wall?

Posted by bluegill @bluegill, Jan 28 5:30pm

I'm 5 weeks into it (Eligard). This is my second rodeo (the first time I was on it for 3 years).

I've been doing intense weight lifting 3 days a week for several months now, and I thought maybe this would help me keep my energy up and keep the side efffects away. But today I've really noticed they're back.

Crap.

I am currently going through ADT and I do a combo of resistance and aerobic training. The only side effect to date has been hot flashes from time to time, nothing else to report. I lift M W and F accompanied by aerobics, and then do aerobics T T S and take Sundays off. You may experience weakness and occasional tiredness which a nap will help. Best of luck. I have dropped my PSA from 108 to .1 in six weeks. Also, watched my diet, eating fruits, vegetables, and fish, excluding processed foods, seed oils, sugar, and dairy products. Best of luck! BTW I am 76.

108 to .1...WOW! That's quite a drop. Are you going to do radiation as well?

I’m training harder now and preparation for ADT and EBRT, since I never did like to lift heavy, I do more cardio like kick boxing and Bulgarian bag work outs and some weights, should I do the opposite? More weight less cardio because of side effects of ADT?

Thanks

Those are pretty good muscle toners if you ask me. But adding some moderate weight training is a good idea - no need to lift heavy.

I've been getting an Eligard shot every 91 days for a year; have felt lethargic and mildly depressed all this time. Finally realized -- from this site -- that those are results of the shots; a relief.
My suggestion: maybe don't have to continue the intensity of your workouts while getting the Eligard, and give yourself both the physical and emotional break while enduring the shots?
I've slowly been able to do that for myself and it helped.

I agree with you based on my own experience with Orgovyx. It was either lighten the weights and continue to exercise, or get disgusted and say screw it I’m a fat loser.
Just a small adjustment of 10 lbs made all the difference!

Only two more shots in the next six months and hoping my ennui eases.

I was away from the gym for a week and a half (trip to Mayo, transperineal biopsy). I went yesterday, and paced myself. I skipped the machines that might involve any muscles connected to my nether regions, and reduced the weights for upper body. But I felt great afterwards, mentally and physically, to be back in the routine.

Maybe it's my personal placebo.

Hi tjv, gee I’m honored to be the Tweety Pie who croaks first🤣!
Yes, there is fatigue and the ONLY way to overcome it is to push thru it. The only analogy I can give is being in a snuggly, warm bed on a cold winter morning when suddenly the alarm goes off and even though every fiber in your being says Nooooooo!, you throw off the covers and go to work.
So when all you want to do is sit like s lump, get your freaken ass UP and hit the weights or go for a brisk walk - anything to shake the malaise….
…..otherwise you WILL turn to flab, get the rolls of fat, the boobs and everything else. The Orgovyx adds to the mix for sure, but I took the advice of everyone on this board and busted my hump and I got thru it. You will too👍

Thanks Phil. If you want to chalk up a benefit to Orgovyx it 's that I'm really sleeping . I was already an early riser, but when that alarm goes off at 5:07 - yeah, I don't feel like getting up. But as you state, I know I have to. Fortunately I have always been in the habit of getting my workouts in early. So I 've found a routine. Get all my workouts in early and then maybe catch a nap after lunch. ( a luxury of being retired) . So far so good. Orgovyx is no picnic, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

OPk- Phil, you're my ' canary in a coal mine'. I start radiation in a week . Am I going to notice a marked difference in overall fatigue? Incontinence? Other?

And did you notice a marked difference in body composition after 6 months of Orgovyx? ( man boobs? )
