Leg and foot swelling

Posted by tomb @tomb1, 2 days ago

I have swelling primarily in my left leg and foot. Had a Venaseal procedure to close a leaky vein but still swelling.

Doctor believes I have lymphodemia due to a prior knee replacement and DVT but haven’t done any specific testing. I am using compression but wonder if there could be another cause of the swelling or treatment of it.

I am coming to Mayo in October to see a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor. What should I expect? Am I seeing the right person?

I’m a bit scared as a friend with leg swelling was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I might reach out to my primary care doctor to ask about that.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Yeah, swelling is worrisome. If you had an echo recently, your ejection factor value might put your mind at ease about CHF concerns. Yes, talk to your doctor before your Mayo clinic visit. That appt is a long time off to be anxious.
Maybe you can get an ultrasound of your leg. You didnt say whether your DVT was recent or older history. It could be lymphedema but as you point out you have a history of vascular issues. If you have lymphedema walking helps, ankle flexes when resting, raising your feet up above your heart, compression helps, you should moisturize your lower legs and feet daily even if they seem supple already. Eventually your care team may give you a pump and that can offer a lot of relief. Best wishes.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.

I will ask my local doctor.

The DVT was 10 years ago.

Possibly request a lymphosinctigraphy. That is how mine was diagnosed. You can Google the procedure for more info. Please try to get in with a Dr that specializes in Lymphedema.
Wish you well!
