Kneeling after hip replacement?

Posted by tallbackhip @tallbackhip, Jul 19 10:10pm

Hopefully a new question, any information on risks of kneeling after hip replacement? As with several topics related to hip replacement, I see information which seems to conflict. I'm presuming one is at least 2 months post op.
Info saying kneeling is OK - one site suggested going to the knee rather than bending from the waist to get something off the floor. Most hip Precautions don't mention kneeling. A few say kneeling is OK as long as bending at the waist is not involved.
- Info indicating kneeling is not so good includes one site describing bending at waist or kneeling as things to avoid life long. One research communication indicated a rare association of dislocation with people who had a job requiring either squatting or kneeling (not clear if this included bending at the waist), presumably for extended periods.

Any thoughts? Any gardeners kneeling for 20-30 minutes or so?

I was told I could basically do anything that did not cause pain. I was bending over doing different exercises after my second week. I am now 7 weeks out and can do most things. I did question my surgeon about bending over before my surgery and he said that there would be no limitations. I had bilateral knee replacement 11 years ago. I’m 77 years old and in decent health.

Thanks xcalak,
I'm focused on the kneeling, hoping to find someone who has solid experience or research on this.
Congratulations on 7 weeks and no problems, but caution on doing too much in the first year. I had difficulty after being "cleared " , at 10 weeks.
Orthopedic surgeons seem to vary from no precautions at all, to lengthy precautions. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762906
The JAMA article reference indicates 1 to 2 % complication rate in the first year, and surgical approach doesn't prevent risk (surprisingly).
Complications may take place in those doing too much, too fast, probably the case for me.
I'm going to be cautious for at least a year, and wish I had read the article before surgery. For me in particular, bending at the waist seems to be a problem.
Hopefully others will comment on kneeling.
