Knee problem
Hello 👋..
My friend was part of a car incident and was shot on her right kneel. Her patella was destroyed and the Doctors that performed her surgery had to remove her patella complete. And after surgery there was no recommendation by Doctor for a kneecap replacement. She started physiotherapy a while and stoped. For close to two years now her knee is somewhat tight and she is unable to run, climb a stair, bend or walk properly but rather she limps while walking. What can be done to enable her be able to do all the things listed above again. Someone help me please 🙏..

It would be good to see a couple different orthopedic knee specialist doctors for 2nd and 3rd opinions about whether additional surgery would help. At a minimum, physical therapy should be attempted again. Tendons and ligaments plus nerves were most likely affected when first injured. It may also be good to see a neurologist for EMG/nerve conduction testing of lower limbs to see how affected.
Having knee injury can affect hips and thighs and alignment so it is important to address this imbalance as soon as possible because it can worsen if neglected. Physical therapy for the knee is very important after surgery to prevent long term/permanent issues due to scar tissue.
Thank you very much @dlydailyhope. I really appreciate. But she started physiotherapy after surgery and then stopped. For close to a year and now she has not done any therapy. She is walking with the leg but unable to kneel down or bend and she limps while walking. And she still feels pains too.

I’m not sure what else she has tried and how old she is but it is important to take care of mental health with therapy and possibly antidepressants. She also may benefit from pain management center, occupational and physical therapy guidance on how best to deal with pain and options for treatment (medications, steroid/cortisone shots/bracing and wraps/stretches/tools to use for daily activities, navigating stairs). She should have her spine/hip alignment checked to see if something could help avoid any further issues that could make walking/mobility more difficult. I’m not sure if a chiropractor and/or massage therapist could help release any areas in her spine/hip/thigh that have locked or tightened up. Heat and ice may help with some symptoms plus topical Voltaren gel or nerve pain creams (like lidocaine, CBD or capsaicin). She may be depressed from all of this and could benefit from help supporting and advocating for her if she is willing to receive help.
@dlydailyhope thank you very very much
Have you seen a good orthopedic surgeon specializing in knees? I'm just wondering if a total knee replacement is possible. That said, there is a patella in place during a TKR.
There's nothing to lose by talking to a few specialists. All the best.
I had knee pain & was afraid I might need a knee replacement
but it turned out to be BURSITIS. Even after physical therapy & taking
Tylenol for arthritis there does not seem to be much improvement.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. K
Hi Kay,
Have you checked with your Dr, in this case an orthopedic knee specialist would be best, about getting a cortisone shot?
Tylenol treats pain but not inflammation. Maybe a long lasting NSAID like Alleve for inflammation? Ibuprofen also treats inflammation.
Diet can also make inflammation worse, and sugar makes inflammation worse. You can check your diet and get rid of anything that has a lot of refined sugar, corn syrup, etc. I don't know if you consume enough sugar for it to be a problem, but cutting out unnecessary sugar will help, or cutting back (I mean, it's Christmas!).
It sounds like time to see a knee specialist. In the meantime icing and elevating your knee will provide some relief. There is a product on Amazon called Hurt Skurt and it is a gel product you place in the freezer, then on your knee. It wraps around the entire knee and I really like it.
I hope this helps. Bursitis is painful but treatable. All the best to you. And Merry Christmas!
Joe
Thank you. Yes, I am trying to cut down on sweets.
A shot did not work, but Tylenol extra strength for Arthritis helps
along with physical therapy. I will look into "hurt skurt" as I use frozen
lima beans which of course tend to slide.
I use Aleve, Advil & Tylenol PM intermittently, as I also have trouble falling asleep. I think the exercising is a must & hopefully will build
some muscle to counter act the bursitis inflamation....& yes I use the gell
when needed.......bless modern science!!!
It all started with me riding a stationary bike for 20 minutes a day for 2 weeks. I stopped because my knees started hurting. I was told I had bone on bone in both knees. I had no pain but soreness and could not walk correctly. I tried PT but it didn't help. Waited 2 years and finally had a TKR in one knee with PT 2 more times. My knees are still the same in both legs (Real sore & can't walk correctly with soreness that migrates ((outside my knees, below my knees and the kneecap)). My doctor won't help me. What should I do now?
You will need an MRI on each knee to be able to identify what else beyond the bone on bone issue might be causing you pain in the knee that did not have the TKR. So your knees ache, but you do not have direct identifiable pain? Soreness would in my humble non-doctor opinion now can be managed by NSAIDs, i.e. ibuprofen (400 mg) and Tylenol (500 mg). 3 times a day. Perhaps Naproxen would prove to be better than ibuprofen because the web says it is strongest in terms of pain relief. You must have swelling in each knee, you should be doing at-home PT, mainly flexing of your legs for several minutes a day. That, in addition to getting your quadriceps strong thru exercise at a gym (weighted leg presses). What definitively does your doctor say when the opinion is that "he won't help you"? Is your doctor an orthopedic specialist?
