Kink near anestemosis

Posted by mk52dk51 @mk52dk51, 6 days ago

My husband is 2 1/2 months post esophagectomy having had his colon used as a new conduit. Hes still on a feeding tube. All was good till 3 weeks ago with bad coughing and vomiting fluids. He was admitted for further testing and when the barium from the esophagram took 3 days to drain, they did an endoscopy for possible dilation or stent. Neither one was feasible as they found a "kink" in the colon. So now he'll be discharged with no path to fixing this. Anyone else experience this?

My husband did not have a kink, but he did have a hole in his stomach. His surgeon operated and patched the hole. Admittedly even that took a long time to heal, but eventually it did.
My question is why can’t your husbands surgeon go in and straighten the kink with a stent? Having no path forward is not acceptable. Does he have a J-tube in for nourishment?

The kink was found during an endoscopy to find what was wrong. It is too far down for a stent to be placed. It would require major surgery but even that was not definitely mentioned. His surgeon was out of town when had these tests. He basically isn't taking anything orally and relies on the j-tube for all his nutrition. This is a bad setback. A friend suggested getting gravity boots and hanging upside down. Ideas like that dont seem so crazy when you're desperate.

I had a kink and also gastropresis 4 months after surgery. My GI prescribed a swallow study to confirm. I was treated with prednisone and Gabepentin which ultimately took care of the gastroparesis and delays ind food digestion.

The kink is still there and causes food delay but at an acceptable pace. I could have tried surgery, but opted against it. I'm no longer on prednisone and gabepentin. I have mostly good days and can get sufficient nutrition. Some days like today are difficult and my stomach hurts so I can't eat enough. Overall, I've been able to maintain my weight with 5 or 6 small meals per day. Getting sufficient protein is difficult though since I do a lot of strength training. I wish you the best and hope recovery is positive.
