Is there a proper way to sleep on your pillow at night?

Should your shoulders be on the pillow or just your neck?

@mikaylar What I try to do is to have my neck supported and relatively straight. I like to sleep on my side, so I have to have my pillow height correct so I'm not side bending my neck in either direction and have a somewhat firm support. I don't want my shoulder collapsing under me, so I also have pillows under my ribs, so I create a space that my arm and shoulder goes into between the pillows. If I get my neck into a bent position, it gives me muscle spasms and my arm can go numb when I'm sleeping because I have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in addition to being a spine surgery patient.

@mikaylar - Jennifer know what she's talking about!

I have, for years, slept on a sobakawa pillow. The pillow itself is a casing filled with buckwheat husks...which sounds weird to picture for sure! The sobakawa does two things for me: (1) The materials help maintain a cool-pillow all night and (2) the husks are infinitely adjustable so I can always produce a comfortable head/neck alignment regardless of side or back sleeping.

I tried the buckwheat pillow. Could not stand the moving-around sounds and the instability. Glad it works for you though. Thanks for the recommendation.

I have cervical stenosis and I use a small Temperpedic pillow for neck support. It helps. I’ll look up the Buckwheat pillow. Never heard of it.

@upstatephil but don’t the buckwheat husks make the pillow feel … grainy? I am like the “Princess and the Pea” - can feel things even under layers! lol. Even “cool gel” pillows are too warm under my head!

@mikaylar that is exactly what I have imagined the sobakawa/buckwheat pillow would feel like under my head! I am also sensitive to sound.

@sequoia - Even a Temperpedic pillow heats up under my head!

@rashida. @mikaylar - Haha. I get your skepticism regarding sobakawa pillows. I guess they're not for everyone? I can tell you these things: (1) I am also a princess (well, prince) and the pea - yet the pillow has never felt grainy, bumpy, or anything but awesomely comfortable to me. (2) There are some "moving around sounds" when you first adjust it - but I've never been awakened by any pillow sounds. (3) It keeps me cool... (4) It's a bit heavy. (5) You can adjust the pillow to the exact, precise position you want regardless of how you sleep. (6) My arms are usually under my head and under my pillow - yet they've never "fallen asleep" during the night as the pillow molds itself over my arm.

Maybe you can find a seller who will give you a free trial? They aren't expensive...
