Is Pyridoxal -5 Phosphate (B6) safe to take?

Posted by haleakala @haleakala, 4 days ago

I've had blood tests done which showed high levels of B6. My functional medicine doctor told me to stop taking supplements with B6 and next blood test showed a significant decrease. My doctor advised me to get B6 from food which I have been doing. I do not see noticeable decrease in symptoms.
I recently learned from a doctor speaking on you tube that B6 in the form of pyridoxal - 5 Phosphate is safe to take and not to take B6 in the form of Pyridoxine (which was in the supplements I used to take) as it can cause nerve damage.

Does anyone know from research done whether Pyridoxal-5 Phosphate is safe to take? They sell a supplement which contains 80 mg per day of this form of B6.

If you had high levels of B6 that your doctor said caused problems, why are you considering taking more B6 again? I might ask your doctor how long to see improvement in symptoms after B6 returns to normal.

That was what my neurologist assured me, that pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P) was safe to take. P-5-P is the form of B6 that comes in the medicinal food called EB-N5. My neurologist invited me to try EB-N5 two years ago and I'm still taking it. My PN is idiopathic large-fiber (balance issues, but no pain) polyneuropathy. A second EMG, last fall, conirmed that my PN has shown little or no progression. Was that thanks solely to EB-N5? Who can say? The most I can say is that the sum-total of the various things I am doing to manage my PN appears to be working.

My very best to you!

B6 will disappear from the bloodstream fairly quickly, but depending on how severe your toxicity is and how long you took B6, it can take many months and even years for B6 to be eliminated from muscle cells and nerves. B6 toxicity can also cause permanent nerve damage and neuropathy, meaning symptoms will not get better no matter how long you are off B6. I would not consider taking any form of B6. I am six months into the B6 detox, and it is a long slog. I am super upset with the neurologists who suggested I take B6 without testing to see if I was deficient. Because of the damage from B6 toxicity, I will never take another vitamin or mineral without being tested first to check for deficiency and continuing tests to monitor levels.

I was considering taking Peridoxal-5 Phosphate because I heard that this form of B6 does not cause nerve damage. It is one of the ingredients in the supplement for nerves sold by a co-founder of a nerve treatment center. She purports that this form is safe to take, I first want to see what others have to say about its safety and whether there are research articles.
My understanding is that a B6 deficiency can also cause nerve damage,

What is EB-N5 medicinal food? Where is it purchased? I was told to get B6 from food. I would
like to know where EB-N5 can be obtained.
Thank you.

Let me say up front, I am not endorsing EB-N5, nor am I a clinician of any sort. I'm a retired actor, which makes me s great pretender. 🙂 I took EB-N5 on the advice of my neurologist, but even he at the time wasn't sure it would be a great help. All I know, after two years, is that my idiopathic large-fiber PN has not progressed. Can I thank EB-N5? I don't know. At least I can't blame it for anything. I'd suggest you do oodles of research (online, from credible sites) before investing.

If you decide to try it, just Google EB-N5. But please remember, I'm not endorsing EB-N5. Good luck to you!

Cheers!
