Intestinal pain after antibiotics.
My wife was hospitalized after a dog bite. Over the course of four nights and three days
L she received intravenous Vancomycin, Rocephin, Flagyl, and morphine. She also received injections of a blood thinner and Percocet in pill form. After release, she was prescribed Clindamycin 300mg and Percocet for pain. She finished the Clindamycin two days ago no Percocet in over a week. She is expecting stomach pain, sometimes very painful. What can she do to alleviate the pain? Thank you.

@hanoverfist04, antibiotics can be harsh on the stomach. @astaingegerdm or @danab might have some experiences to share with you. Did she talk with her GI doc about the pain? Were probiotics suggested for her?
@hanoverfist04
So sorry to hear about your wife’s experience. Those antibiotics are very powerful that kill any bacteria in the body, including the “good” ones in your intestines.
I just went through something similar- treated for sinus infections, one treatment right after the other. I also experienced bad abdominal pain. I knew what happened and started taking probiotics. The ones I usually take didn’t work well so I got one that had been recommended another time- it’s called Florastor. I had great relief.
Have her try that and hope that she gets some relief.
If the pain continues or gets worse she should talk to her doctor.
Hi Hanoverfist04, I can definitely relate as I was also hospitalized with a virus that took a while to find so I was on antibiotics for 6 weeks. It did cause stomach issues and lack of appetite along with keeping food down particularly in the morning when I had my regular medication to take. When I was discussing this with my PCP He put me on a probiotic a very specific one. Lactobacillus Acidophilus and to make sure the acid ingredient was last not first. I found it online thru Amazon as I could not find it in regular stores like Walgreens or Walmart.
He told me that like you have discovered when we take antibiotics for a long period it kills the good bacteria in our digestion track and allows the bad bacteria to grow and cause the problems your wife is having. So maybe talk with your doctor about that. I was on the same antibiotic Vancomycin & Clindamycin your wife is, both in the Hospital and at home but not the pain killer. I also had Cdiff which also is another risk when to much bad bacteria develops in you digestion track I discovered. So I hope that helps. It was a few years ago for me so I don't remember how long it took but for the nausea I was also put on an anti-nausea pill to keep my food down. I might also mention Yogurt is also a great probiotic and doubles as food. Good Luck Let us know if that helps.
