Increasd clucose level when on Chemo (docetaxel) and corticosteroides

Posted by acstrath @acstrath, 3 days ago

Hi,
I started a course of Docetaxel three days ago and this morning my glucose level (fasting) was 99 mg/dl against my normal of around 80.
I have also been taking corticosteroids (Dexamethasone) to combat some of the side effects not wanted. Is it normal to get this increase in blood sugar level when on Chemo and Dexamethasone?

corticosteroids will definitely raise your glucose levels. Not sure about chemo.

I would not really worry about having a 99 for fasting glucose. 125 is the point of which fasting glucose is called pre-diabetic, you aren’t close to that. The real question is, what was your A1c? That number tells what your average glucose level was over three months. I never do fasting glucose tests, but every three months I do an A1c.

Drugs like Lupron, Orgovyx and etc. Also raise your blood sugar, They say to check your blood sugar regularly when you are on those drugs.

Your diet can change your glucose level very quickly. Stay away from sweets and eat a lot of vegetables “almost sounds like his is your mother speaking”. You really do have a lot of control over it.

I have gone from what they called prediabetic to completely normal by just eating fewer sweets And more fruits and vegetables. Something like the Mediterranean diet can keep your blood sugar low.

Thanks tuckerp,
Yes, I thought that the corticosteroids are the culprits. Good to get it confirmed, though.

Thanks for your reply, jeffMar,
I have never tested my A1c, so it is unknown. I do my weekly testing at home to keep a tab on the sugar. I do eat only healthy foodstuff and keep a healthy weight. The hospital do a blood test every three weeks and the doctor has not complained yet. It has always been around the 80:is. Until now. Probably will be a little bit higher next time.

I would say normal based on the chemistry you are doing. I'm curious how they will treat it, or not, if is rises more. I am Prediabetic and my fasting glucose is normally 105-115. Not sure how Orgovyx will affect it. I'm pretty sure my pcp will want to treat and not sure if I will accept it. I've bottomed out on that stuff in the past. Best wishes!
