Immediate Side effects of Brachytherapy

Posted by l700 @l700, May 19 9:14am

Hello, this is my first post to the group. I’m so thankful that this forum exist. I have two sessions of Brachytherapy scheduled for June. My concern is my energy level following the two procedures. For example, I have the sessions on Tuesday of the week and then I have a strenuous weekend beginning that Friday. I am concerned that two days of recuperation won’t be enough to give me the energy to carry out the work I have to do that weekend. Any thoughts from Brachytherapy veterans would be appreciated.

I had a single High Dose treament. I had mild night time urinary tract obstruction that responded to increased Flomax. Because of ADT I have some fatigue, but I was back to "normal" in about three days.

Sounds like you are having High Dose Brachy? Generally with any radiation tiredness can be an issue. I know Low Dose kicks in gradually but I assume High Dose is quicker. You don't mention the nature of your strenuous weekend, but I would recommend reaching out to your medical team for post op do's and don'ts to see if they conflict with your plans.

Thank you for sharing. I was also concerned about what the increase in radiation will do to my urinary tract. Thanks again!

Yes, I'm having HDR. I am a musician and I have three straight days of performing, 3 hrs per day, on the weekend of my procedure. between loading in/out equipment and the performance itself, I burn a lot of energy. My medical team understands and has given me the option of moving my procedure until after my performances. Thanks for sharing!

I had two HDR brachy sessions in April 2023. I didn't experience any "low energy" BUT I also didn't plan any big days. My life is generally low energy or at least no "forced" needs for high energy (70 at the time and retired). The day after my first session I did a few pushups and took a 1.3 mile walk. I avoided bicycling and slides down a banister. No pain in my perineum but it did kind of signal that it would not feel good to put a lot of pressure on it. Your prostate will take a beating and will slow your urine stream for some months but they give you Flomax (or generic) for that. It took me nearly 60 days (after the second session) to get off the drug and get back to having a fairly normal pee. Best to listen to your body and not push it when you don't need to (like needing to get away from a burning alligator attack).
