Ibandronate infusion vs pills

Why would my doctor prescribe Ibandronate infusion rather than the pills? When he prescribed the infusion I didn’t realize it came in pill form.

One reason might be if you have a diagnosis that cannot take the oral form. Or cannot stay upright for the 39-60 minutes required. If you have taken a drug orally from the same class of medication and didn’t respond. Taken by mouth, they are poorly absorbed by the gut, so IV doses can be given at lower doses and generally are more effective.

It’s hard to say without knowing your medical history.

Many insurance companies in the US require one year of oral therapy before they will approve IV formulations.

I was on Fosamax for about 5 years with good results. I was off of it for several years and then took Fosamax again for 2 years. I was taken off of it this year because of severe pain in my throat when I ate certain foods. The pain has not returned. My doctor wanted to prescribe Reclast but I was nervous about taking a yearly infusion. I believe that his plan is to get me on Reclast if I tolerated Ibandronate.
