I wish I had my Ostomy back
Hello all, I’m new here. I had an ostomy in 2013, and the “takedown” 6 months later. Sigmoid removed. The first surgeon cut a nerve, and also a muscle atrophied. After all this time I am still severely constipated, I never go other than rock hard little pebbles. If I take stool softener or a laxative, I am not able to make 5 feet to the bathroom without a huge mess everywhere even at 1/2 dose. I have had huge messes happen in public. Has this happened to anyone out there?

Hi @klghanson, I would like to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am so sorry to hear about your struggles with constipation. I did want to let you know that Connect has a group centered around discussions having to do with Ostomies. You can now find your question here. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/ostomy/
This will allow members that have had similar issues after an ostomy removal to weigh in on the conversation.
@klghanson, have you discussed with your care team about the possibility of getting it back?
I'M A 78 YR.OLD MALE & HAVING MANY CONSTIPATING ISSUES I HAVE FOUND GOOD RESULTS WITH TAKING 2 OR 3 PRUNES BETORE BEDTIME.IT MIGHT WORK FOR YOU.I CAN ONLY SUGGEST WHAT HAS WORKED FOR ME...
@klghanson. I am so sorry you have such embarrassing moments. A lot of people risk embarrassment every time we go out in public. I am assuming you have found adult diapers but you know assuming can get you in trouble so I will continue on.... Adult diapers come in many brands and each brand has its own benefits and drawbacks. Some are bulky, some are thin. Some have adjustable tabs and others are pull ups. Some have tear-away sides others make a real mess trying to get them off so if you opt for that kind, carry a small pair of scissors with you in a rescue bag along with wipes, a change of underwear and a spare pair of pull-ups. There’s just nothing like being prepared. I hurt for you as I have had near disasters more than once. Good luck to you on your journey.
