I was diagnosed with EPI and struggle with the limited diet choices

Posted by pennie225 @pennie225, Sep 5, 2023

After being diagnosed with severe EPI I was told to follow a diet that has no meat , no fish , no dairy and nothing fried. Other members in my household eat what they want and mealtimes are depressing.

This doesn’t sound right in terms of dietary recommendations. Are you taking enzymes? I also have recently been diagnosed with EPI.

Are you taking enzymes?
I was diagnosed a year and half ago. With no input from my dr, I have learned what I can tolerate. I rake Creon enzymes and it took over a year for my body ro settle down and for me to learn what foods work for me. Everyone I’ve communicated with is able to tolerate different foods.
There is a Facebook group for EPI and I’ve learned so much from their experiences. I’d recommend you ask your dr about enzyme replacement. It has made a huge improvement in my life.

That doesn’t sound right. I too was diagnosed with EPI 2 months ago and taking Zenpep allows me to eat anything. Due to Hashimoto’s I don’t eat gluten and little diary, but otherwise anything goes. Maybe see a dietician. I read that is advised but haven’t yet done it.

My daughter has EPI. Her experience has been similar to @vickin. She is in her mid-20s so goes out a lot. She has learned through trial and error what she can eat. She did see a dietician who told her to increase her Creon when she knows she is going to eat something high in fat or that doesn't work well for her. This has been helpful if not foolproof.

I am taking ZenPep and my Dr. also suggested I increase the dose if I’m eating a big meal or something fatty. It’s been through trial and error that I’ve figured out my limited choices. I keep a food journal and that helps. I should check out the Facebook group. Thanks.

Well now. I’m not going to knock your body’s wisdom about that. Certainly, it knows more.

Type in search line- living with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency group. It is a private group, so you have to ask to join, but although it shows up in your FB feed, no one but members of the group can see it.
I have learned so much. It is amazing that so many GI drs do not talk with patients about diet restrictions. And all the other issues that make life difficult. Keep working, it eventually will calm.
Good luck!

Thanks, just signed up. Creon has been so helpful though I was frustrated with knowing what to eat. Then SIBO and even more confused - conflicting diets for several diagnoses. Meds are good, now trying one new thing a day.

Great way to do it. I kept a food journal and that helped tremendously.
